Some of the puzzles we’ve been running at The Telegraph have been around for decades and decades. Our world famous Cryptic Crossword, for example, is known for playing a crucial part in World War II. In 1942, it was used to test the wits of the fastest solvers in the country, which led to the best of them being invited to work as code-breakers at Bletchley Park. Even with our long history of puzzling, we’re dedicated to giving you new and exciting puzzles. This is where Cross Atlantic comes in. Perhaps the most well-known example is "moon starer", which is an anagram of ASTRONOMER. This may be slightly unfair on Galileo et al, as the Moon is only one heavenly body out of countless billions, but there's no doubt that it's appropriate.

The miracle and menace of each era is original, but the debate over how Americans spend their time remains extraordinarily consistent over the decades. There are many famous (or infamous) anagrams out there, some of my own favourites being OLD WEST ACTION, which unjumbles to CLINT EASTWOOD; the well-known I'M TORY PLAN B, which becomes TONY BLAIR, MP; and of course ELVIS, who, according to some, LIVES. These all belong to a specific class of anagrams that provides more entertainment than most: the aptagram.

In case you’re not familiar with the basic story of The Last of Us, it’s an emotionally driven story about a young girl and a man caught in a zombie apocalypse. If that sounds familiar, yes, all this has been done before. There are plenty of horror films and television shows that explore the journeys of survivors following an apocalyptic event, from George A Romero’s Night of the Living Dead to recent series such as The Walking Dead.Perhaps best of all, anyone of a mathematical bent may appreciate the fact that ELEVEN PLUS TWO is an anagram of TWELVE PLUS ONE.

It’s made quite the wave, the furthermost ripples of which have found their way into today’s Telegraph puzzles. If you’re somebody who uses brainteasers as a means to break the cycle of doomscrolling seemingly endless bad news, you might want to look away now. The televised The Last of Us is a great demonstration of gaming’s worth as a medium for art and world-building. So far the show has been very faithful to the game. People who’d never think to turn on a PlayStation (or indeed any games console) are loving the series, and it’s scoring highly with critics and audiences alike. Video games are a passion of mine, so much so that it was my entire career before choosing to write about puzzles. This means I’m particularly delighted that The Last of Us show from HBO is making some waves. One might think that examples of aptagrams are few and far between, but there are more than one might imagine. Past puzzles have incorporated playing cards, people called Brian and even titles of 1980s pop hits spiced up with names of curries. This time, thinking of Spare might help you to the end. Other words or phrases don't quite anagram to give something of identical meaning, but instead give something very close to the original. DIRTY ROOM becomes DORMITORY; DEBIT CARD contains all the letters of BAD CREDIT; I'LL MAKE A WISE PHRASE jumbles to WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE.
