About this deal

If you’re asked to keynote or serve in a similar public role and know someone from an underrepresented group who’d be an equally good fit (or better), recommend that person (after asking them first if they’d like to be put forward). Context can include your current mental state (are you feeling defensive? Upset? Nervous? Calm?), the physical space you're in (private or public area), or the apology’s medium (phone, online, text message, in person). We need people to do this even if they cannot fully understand what it’s like to be oppressed for their race or ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, class, religion, or other marker of identity. Stop the pattern: be careful where you step in the future. When it comes to oppression, we want to actually change the “footwear” to get rid of privilege and oppression (sneakers for all!), but metaphors can only stretch so far!

Our Premier League Takeover Footy & Booky Quiz ran for a third consecutive year, and was hosted by top sports presenter Kelly Somers, along with Football School authors Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton. The quiz was aimed at pupils aged 8 to 12, and featured two rounds of questions (one football-themed, one reading-themed). You can still access all the footy fun by watching the quiz recording.Listen and ask questions when someone describes an experience you haven’t had. Don’t jump in with your own personal stories. I liked this book, but as far as writing on social justice goes this was nothing ground breaking. It would be a great starting place for someone that is younger or older that's just beginning to learn about the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC community and how to be an ally. Cassie Chadderton, CEO of World Book Day, said: “Our aim as a charity is to encourage all children to love reading, see themselves as readers and ultimately, improve their life chances. This is even more important at a time when the cost of living crisis is set to damage access to books and reading for thousands of children.

There’s an impulsive desire to fix, to be the hero of the story, to swoop in and rescue and, for some, it also comes from a place of superiority and/or a desire to be forgiven. It feeds into something called the “White Saviour Industrial Complex” – a term first coined by Harvard professor and novelist Teju Cole in 2012. “White Saviour Industrial Complex is not about justice, it’s about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege… There is much more to doing good work than ‘making a difference’. There is the principle of first do no harm. There is the idea that those who are being helped ought to be consulted over the matters that concern them,” explains Cole.A Bus, a Poster, and a Mirror" by Brendan Kiely- An interesting take on bullying from someone who used to be a bully. You could begin with doing something as easy as reading a glossary of terms and teaching yourself the right language to use when talking with LGBT+ people. It’s a tiny but crucial step you can take to educate yourself and make sure you are using the terminology to be respectful to everyone around you, and help yourself to feel more confident when discussing LGBT+ issues. 2. Educate yourself on the history of LGBT activism
