About this deal

I’m not dismissing this approach at all, but if I’m honest, the gather was always something that bothered me. It’s a problem I’ve been wanting to solve for a loooong time. I love this construction style because the hat can be worked in one piece and, like many top down construction styles, it’s easy to adjust the circumference and hat height as you crochet. This allows you to achieve a perfect fit without too much drama. The first beanie I’m highlighting is my Scandi stashbuster hat pattern, which is a great project for using up left over yarn. The hat is worked top down using the classic moss stitch, which creates a beautiful vertical stripe effect when crocheted in alternating colours. There are many different styles of hat that can be made with crochet. The use of these terms varies between different cultures and geographies, so below I outline 8 different kinds of hats you might see crochet patterns for. I also give a brief description of the features of each style.

When changing colour, this will be done when joining to the first stitch with a slip stitch. Insert hook to join and pull through new colour. The free cosy faux fur pom pom beanie pattern from Daisy cottage designs uses the textured crochet bean stitch to create an easy hat pattern which can be easily adapted to work with any yarn weight and a suitable hook size. Continue increasing the size of the circle until its circumference reaches the desired circumference of the finished hat – this forms the crown of the hat. (More about sizing later on) Sew through the sides of the rows at the top of the hat and pull tightly to gather. Secure in place before rotating to seam the last row to Row 1 with a whipstitch seam (or a crocheted slip stitch seam if you prefer). The important point is to know what you want to achieve in terms of function, fit and length before you start to crochet. Once you have decided on your style, you can set about deciding how you want to construct it.

Deerstalker– a typically tweed panelled cap with ear flaps, traditionally worn for hunting. The brim and flaps over the ears can be folded up and tied together over the crown. Beanie hat– a close fitting brimless hat made of soft fabric which may be worn short and crown slimming or long and slouchy. This means that the crown must be large enough to cover the top of the head (in your desired style) and the body should be long enough to cover the ears (I have a problem with hats that don’t keep my ears warm).

Scarves and Cowls: Seed stitch creates a reversible and textured fabric, making it ideal for scarves and cowls. You can use it with a single color or incorporate multiple colors for a striped effect. Round 4: ch2 (doesn’t count as a sc and ch1), sc in first ch-1 sp, [ch1, sk 1st, sc in next ch-1 sp] – repe There is some sewing involved in this design and, largely for that reason I have classed this as an intermediate level pattern. The pattern of the Crochet Star Stitch Beanie was featured in the Countdown to Christmas Blog Hop, an awesome event organized by RaeLynn (a.k.a. Itchin’ for some Stitchin’) and Sarah (a.k.a. Ned and Mimi). If you like to play with a little colourwork without giving your tapestry needle too much of a workout (ombre or variegated yarn = fewer ends to sew in!), then this might be the one for you.Crochet Technique Tutorials Learn all about crochet technique from Hannah of HanJan Crochet. There are so many ways to achieve the same result in crochet and there is no right or wrong – this is just the way I do things! Crochet Garments Patterns A collection of simple and modern crochet garments from HanJan Crochet. Featuring simple shapes, minimal seaming and inventive constructions, everyone can enjoy making these crochet patterns. Yarn over, pull through all three loops on the hook (this creates the first foundation half treble crochet). This isn’t one for a beginner crocheter, but the pattern comes with a step-by-step instructions and a photo tutorial, so don’t be intimidated if you want to try something different. This issue isn’t isolated to hats and there are lots of video tutorials on you tube sharing different ways to avoid this wandering seam phenomena. So if it’s a issue you face then there are a range of techniques to try out there.

Round 6: Ch2, [2fpdc in next st, 1dc, 1fpdc in each of next 2 sts, 1dc] nine times, ss to top of first st, turn. 54 sts There is a great chart from Oombawka Design Crochet that tells you some great info about how to make a hat that fitsincluding how long to make them if you’d like it to be a slouch hat.Continue crocheting in your stitch pattern without increasing until your hat reaches it’s desired height, allowing for the length of the brim if you’re including one – this forms the body of the hat. It has a fitted crown, seamed to make it fit over the head with no gather. You can wear it as a slouchy skater style beanie or toque, or turn or roll it up at the brim for a seafaring vibe. Row 2: Without chaining, miss 3 ss, 1hdc in BLO of next 6 sts, 1hdc through both loops of last st, turn. 7 hdc When making items, especially for babies, infants, toddlers and children, take extra care to ensure pieces are securely sewn together and be mindful of choking hazards and health and safety risks. Completed size: The size is for an adult small and these measure Heigh 23cm (9 inches) Circumference 45.5cm (18 inches) Approx I’d never heard it called a pillow hat before doing my research for this post but I think it is an apt name! I used a similar construction for my Christmas gift hat using the pretty crochet star stitch. Secondly, a crochet brim can add a pleasing visual to a hat. I find that a brim adds a nice defined finish to a beanie and gives it a sense of balance. Especially if you’ve put a pom pom on top. I have a separate post which goes into the details of hat sizing (including size charts). It describes the process by which you can crochet a hat for any size head based on your gauge. This has the advantage of reducing that unsightly gather common in so many side to side hat designs, without adding over complex shaping. As you ca see from the top down image below, I think it’s pretty effective (if I say so myself!).The amount of yarn needed for a crochet hat will depend on all the usual factors such as size of the hat, type of crochet stitch and the weight of the yarn. The stitch pattern is: DC 2, LongDC2tog (in other words – DC in each of the next two stitches, LongDC2tog over the two DC just completed). This is a relatively easy crochet beanie pattern (certainly easier than it looks!) that will keep you super cosy.
