About this deal

It’s that good--a powerful and impeccably-written story that I wholeheartedly recommend for 10-14 year-olds. Through it all, each has a special place in their heart for that one perfect day back at the Ferris wheel. But I like to think that the clouds at the end, coming together with the ray of light shining through them is forgiveness. The second extract is about the new rules that everyone had to follow at school, as outlined in assembly by an angry Mr Schmidt.

Inspired by a true story, When the World Was Ours is an extraordinary novel that is as powerful as it is heartbreaking, and shows how the bonds of love, family and friendship allow glimmers of hope to flourish, even in the most hopeless of times.Three young friends—Leo, Elsa, and Max—spend a perfect day together, unaware that around them big changes are coming as Europe is descending into a growing darkness and that they will soon be cruelly ripped apart from one another. Inspired by a true story, this is the perfect read for fans of The Book Thief and Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl. Elsa remains with her family through many of the indignities bestowed on her simply because of her faith, but she is separated from them when they are taken to Auschwitz. His activities give him a sense of pride, except for when his teachers say horrible things about Jews. The fact the book is written from the perspective of the three children makes it both accessible and educational for teenage readers.

The characters start out young, when their friendship was simple, uncomplicated by the political world and expectations of adults around them. There are details that will shock and upset readers - but I think this is inevitable when grappling with this historical experience. Inspired by a true story, When the World was Ours is an extraordinary novel that is as powerful as it is heartbreaking, and shows how the bonds of love, family and friendship allow glimmers of hope to flourish, even in the most hopeless of times. The writing was probably for an average middle grade reader, but the stories and themes (friendship, acceptance, perseverance, persecution, anti-semitism) were definitely for an older audience.

Max’s story is told in the third person providing greater distance between the character and the reader and allowing a more objective view of his behaviour. It covers a period in history that cannot fail to shock, but what struck me in this was the emotional impact the book held. In 1937 the strained friendship is severed when, fearing the cruelty of the Nazis, Elsa’s family moves to Czechoslovakia. But what elevates this book about three friends and their different fates in World War Two is the story of Max, the nice, ordinary boy who gradually becomes seduced into hatred and prejudice.
