We’ve tested a range of screens with various curvatures, screen sizes and aspect ratios. The 31.5” screen with 1000R curve on the Odyssey Neo G7 is certainly a defining feature of the product. Initially we found this curve very difficult to ignore regardless of what we were using the monitor for – it was something we were always consciously aware of. After an adjustment period, which took several days of using the monitor for us, it started to feel a bit more natural but was still something we were often consciously aware of. It was different in this sense to models with a shallower curve, where we almost forget we’re even using a curved screen after this adaptation period. The curve draws you into the experience and arguably makes the experience more immersive – some will enjoy the overall feeling or experience of using a steeply curved monitor like this, but for others it could be annoying. Particularly on the desktop, where the curvature tends to be easier to notice or where the geometric perfection of a flat screen might be preferred. The curvature is potentially beneficial in terms of viewing comfort, too. We found this monitor perfectly comfortable to use, but we’d say the same about many flat screens as well, even for relatively large screens like this. Unlike most gaming monitors, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 (2023) is able to connect to the internet and run streaming applications without the need to be connected to an external device such as a PC. That’s all thanks to the Tizen operating system that’s pre-installed onto the monitor. Additionally the Matte Display reduces light reflection on the screen, minimizing distractions during the most intense gaming sessions and letting the large screen deliver details while keeping the player focused on the game and the stunning visual performance. The panel weighs 25.8 pounds. That's not too hefty, especially when compared with monitors like the BenQ Mobiuz Gaming Monitor (EX480UZ), which weighs about 42 pounds with only a 5-inch difference in screen size. The Neo G7 isn’t very dexterous, offering no height adjustment or swivel, just a tilt range of -2 to 20 degrees, which is reasonable considering the screen size. It is wall-mountable with a 200mm-by-200mm VESA mount.
The colour temperature deviation was moderate, with significant deviation recorded towards the left of the screen (up to DeltaE 3.5, to the left of centre) and bottom right (DeltaE 3.3). Note again that individual units vary when it comes to uniformity and that you can expect deviation beyond the measured points. For example, there was a noticeable cool tint on our unit towards the extreme side edges which aren’t accounted for by these measurements. Also be aware that there are some perceived deviations in both brightness and colour temperature that are typical on VA panels and aren’t reflected by these readings. In addition to the quantitative testing above, we performed a subjective assessment of the uniformity of a variety of ‘medium’ shades, including 50% grey. Some monitors exhibit uniformity issues such as splotches or striations when viewing screen fills of such shades, giving an inconsistent appearance that some users refer to as ‘DSE’ (‘Dirty Screen Effect’). VA models are particularly prone to this. We observed minor striations and very slight patchiness in places, but there were no obvious issues such as clear striations or heavy patchiness.The Odyssey Neo G7 will be available globally from Q1 2023, with launch schedules varying by region. For more information, please visit: Odyssey Neo G7. The Samsung Odyssey G70B has low input lag for a responsive feel with high-frame-rate signals like at 144Hz and 120Hz. While the input lag increases with 60Hz signals, it's still low enough for casual gaming, but you'll notice delay with BFI enabled. For the lowest input lag you need to make sure you have the input label set to 'PC' and you're in Game Mode. With these settings, you can only send a fixed 144Hz refresh rate with VRR disabled, so we had to use a workaround to measure the input lag at 120Hz and 60Hz while still in Game Mode with the 'PC' input and VRR disabled. But this is likely the reason why there are so few adjustability options. You can tilt the screen upwards by 20 degrees, and downwards by 2 degrees, but that’s it. You can’t swivel or adjust the height of the monitor, once again questioning the merit of setting it up on a desk.
