The unit doesn't come with a remote, but it can learn how to use your existing TV's remote to control volume. On the joyous 24K Magic: Bruno Mars album, songs burst with life and Bruno’s voice really shines through the six dedicated mid-range drivers. Outside of its generally solid frequency response, the Playbase does a great job pulling off stereo effects and anchoring dialog to the center of the screen. We’re surprised with the Playbase’s sound stage and the wide, expansive sound field it creates. Never mind its size — you’ll never accuse this speaker of sounding small. Essentially, the Playbar has a few minor sonic flaws, but the Playbase’s one flaw is a bigger one, which is why in the sound from the Playbar just edges it. The only other controls on the unit itself are a touch-sensitive play/pause button and two little touch-sensitive panels for volume control that flank it on the front of the top panel. You might actually find you’ll never touch these controls, because you can control everything from Sonos’ simple, exhaustive app.

This is a soundbase concept whereby you place your TV on top of the soundbar instead of behind it, saving some space in the process. The Beam sounds exceptionally spacious and weighty for a device its size, stretching right across the front of a small- to medium-sized room and delivering bass with a depth and authority that’s entirely unexpected – as is the volume it’s capable of producing. The Beam (Gen 2)– a 2022 What Hi-Fi? Award-winner – sounds better still, so keep it in mind if your budget stretches. The Playbase also includes the same features as the Playbar, such as Dialogue Enhancement (which enhances vocal clarity) and Night Mode (which tones down the bass during loud action scenes). Both features are simple to activate, with a simple tap of each respective logo positioned above the Playbase's volume control inthe Sonos app. Now, you should note that the Playbase only supports the 2.4GHz band so don’t be worried if you can’t find your 5GHz network. Sonos did this deliberately for a more reliable connection with better range. Source devices for our test included a Roku Ultra streaming box as well as Oppo’s UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player. We had initially connected the Playbase to a LeEco X55 4K Ultra HD TV, but were unable to get the set’s optical digital audio output to work properly. Performance

The bottom line? If you don’t mind the fact that most of your listening will be in stereo, the Playbase is a great option to improve your music listening and movie watching experience.
