The North Will Rise Again - Book Launch | Live Theatre

The North… is a very personal book, and all the better for it; the narrative is laced with Niven’s memories of, and experiences from, his life in the North which add a fascinating extra perspective. Born in the North, a founding member of the band Everything Everything, exiled down South for a number of years, and finally returning home to take a new direction in academia, Niven clearly has a strong attachment to his homeland, using the Welsh word hiraeth to describe that longing for return. It’s a feeling with which I can strongly identify, being subject to it myself when it comes to Scotland, and this adds power to his narrative. The book by necessity often focuses on the Newcastle area, from where Niven hails and where he currently teaches at the University; but he explores broadly, pulling in particularly Liverpool and Manchester as well as the wider North generally. Given MES' and Kay Carroll's apparent interest in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe (see Muzorewa's Daughter), it's not unlikely the irony of the phrase might have appealed. These heady years were not to last, however. Smith’s reputation fell sharply from its ’60s zenith as the tide turned against those buildings perceived as “concrete monstrosities” that had been created by an out-of-touch technocratic elite. His ultimate downfall would come in 1974, in a kind of allegory for social democratic Britain, when he was arrested on corruption charges relating to the dodgy developer John Poulson. Smith spent the next six years in prison, before dying in relative poverty and obscurity in 1993.The Tyne and Wear Metrocars are a fleet of light rail vehicles manufactured by Metro-Cammell for the Tyne and Wear Metro in North East England between 1975 and 1981.

R. Totale he was an ex cabaret artist and an underground being. He's got tentacles that's why he had to go underground, it's like his face started leaking, I've always imagined him as some sort of a Big Youth character cursed with this mystical insight." The Rising of the North In November 1569, hundreds of rebels assembled in this Market Place with the aim of re-establishing Catholic worship in the North. They swiftly captured Barnard Castle on the River Tees and widely reinstated the Mass, but by January the rebellion had failed and great numbers had been hanged here and elsewhere as traitors. Dan submits thiis entry from the New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, edited by Tom Dalzell and Terry Victor. Vol 1, Routledge, 2006:

I think if there has been a classic North East temperament when it comes to music it has tended to be quite maximalist, “heavy” and, if you like, bent on being world-conquering. Partly there’s a heavy industry element here I think, whereas the North West, for example, has a slightly different culture more oriented around textiles. Sting is a really interesting example because his dad was a shipbuilder, and I think that if you look at the astonishingly dramatic pictures of ships being built in Wallsend in the industrial period, you can kind of see how that might have found its way into his music – if only in the sense of a massively far-reaching ambitiousness. The centrality of the blues – versus melody and psychedelia in Manchester and Liverpool – is another factor. It is rather naive of the author to believe that the imposition of a political mayor on the North East region of England will make the slightest contribution to its prosperity. The prosperity of the North East lay entirely in its coal deposits and the industries these spawned. Now you’re excavating my very soul! I’d stress that my writing really emerges from the imagination and focuses largely on imagined communities. So it’s all about dreams in the end, and how various artists, musicians and politicians have dealt with those dreams. The role of the artist in society is largely to try to work out how we’ve gone wrong, and gesture imaginatively – and yes idealistically – at how we might do things better. It’s for the social scientists and the planners and the governance experts to draw up more specific blueprints for things like regional government. Hopefully there’s productive overlap between these two areas, even if I’m firmly on the culturalist side of the fence. It was, Niven writes, an “earth-shattering event in northern history,” and the spread of machinofacture brought with it new and ever greater feats of engineering and advancements, and unprecedented forms of scientific discovery. In these years, “the North of England effectively became civilization.” It was “progress” that the North of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries stood for, and in doing so it offered “a forceful, even violent counter-theory about the sort of country England was — or could be.” The gigs will be hosted by author, journalist and Membranes frontman John Robb, who said in a statement: “As the wonderful Hunter S Thompson once said, ‘When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro…’ With ‘The North Will Rise Again’ we fulfil his prophetic words with a series of live cast gigs that embrace the cultural, social and political aspects of the north of England and inspire, empower and entertain people across the world. How can the North recapture the sense of dynamism and futurism that once made it one of the most forward-looking places in the world? Known for their famous rivalry, Liverpool and Manchester have reached hands and hearts across the M62 and come together to host The North Will Rise Again(30 & 31 January ‘21), a live-streamed micro festival featuring The Charlatans, Lightning Seeds, Red Rum Club, Ist Ist, Zuzuand LIINES.The North Will Rise Again at Gorilla and The Invisible Wind Factory Johnny James, Managing Editor Last Updated 20 January 2021 If we are looking for historical precedent from the British Isles, then we could do worse than resurrect the title of Sheriff. Historically, sheriffs presided over counties, while mayors presided over towns and cities, so there’s an obvious synergy there. The argument that this would cause confusion with the ceremonial role of the High Sheriff isn’t really convincing, given that we don’t have a problem with there being both an elected Mayor of London and a ceremonial Lord Mayor of London. Most people can, most of the time, tell the difference. An elected Sheriff would be different to a High Sheriff, and both can coexist. Taking a bluey is gonna be a French Blue - drinamyl - which is made from dexamphetamine (Dexy's Midnight Runners - their name being a reference to midnight raids on Chemist shops to steal Dexamphetamine and the subsequent all night Mod and Northern Soul dance parties) and amylobarbitone. Very popular in the 1960s and 1970s, also know as Purple Hearts. See the song Cut My Hair by The Who in Quadrophenia where Jimmy sings of his mum finding his 'box of blues'. MES was a total speed freak all his adult life." Myths and metaphors are powerful political tools. So it is that Alex Niven’s new book, The North Will Rise Again, seeks to crystallize a new metaphor for the North of England — one that can, he hopes, reverse its decline.
