About this deal

Still, Samsung can justify its pricing because the Galaxy S20 FE 5G offers features that other smartphones in this price segment do not. The IP68 rating will let you take your smartphone for a dip in a pool, and 15W wireless charging is quite convenient. You can even reverse charge other smartphones or accessories at 4.5W. While these features might not count as necessities for most users, they do improve the premium smartphone experience. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 4500mAh battery, matching the Galaxy S20 Plus and outperforming all the other S20 models in my tests. This is almost certainly down to the Snapdragon 865 chip, which seems to be far more efficient than its Exynos counterpart. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition was announced on September 23, 2020, and became available to buy on October 2. That release date was roughly six months after the Galaxy S20’s launch, and a few more months passed before the Samsung Galaxy S21 launched in January 2021.

Gaming in particular felt fast and responsive – we never experienced any lag or glitches, even when playing demanding games like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG Mobile at top settings. Many have complained about the decreased performance and battery skills of the Exynos version vs the Qualcomm so it’s great to see Samsung deciding to give a wider launch to the arguably superior model. AnTuTu reported a score of 6,41,038, while Geekbench's single-core and multi-core results were 560 and 3,136 respectively. These are higher than what the Exynos-based model managed (4,62,330 in AnTuTu; 517 and 2,573 in Geekbench) but are lower than the performance figures we've seen from Snapdragon 888-powered smartphones in the same price segment.

Camera and Battery Life

This is a pretty ingenious solution for letting you capture both solo and group selfies without having multiple front-facing snappers, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see other companies adopt it. Proximity Sensor, Hall Effect Sensor, Light Sensor, Gyroscope Sensor, Accelerometer (G-Sensor), Magnetometer, Fingerprint Sensor UK and Europe Zone data usage only. Data used while outside of our Europe Zone is not included. Applies if a data bundle Bolt On is not chosen. 5. Calls to customer services

There are no cosmetic changes between the 4G and the 5G models of the Galaxy S20 FE. The phone looks identical to the 4G model and has the same button placement, with the power and volume buttons on the right. The primary speaker is placed at the bottom, next to the USB Type-C port and the mic. The earpiece speaker is hidden in a tiny slit at the top end of the display, and doubles up as the second speaker to offer stereo sound which is loud and clear. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 may be a year old, but it's no slouch and offers reliable flagship-grade performance when it comes to regular tasks and gaming. The phone performed a lot better than the Exynos 990-powered Galaxy S20 FE in our tests (although some scores might not be directly comparable due to benchmark updates). Low light performance is fine and you can get good shots without great light either in the default mode or the more specific Night option. I find Samsung’s Night mode a little behind some of the rivals, tending to over-brighten and blow out highlights. Still, it’s there if you’re in a very dark situation.

It comes with an S Pen included, so both the adults and kids in your house can unleash their creative side and up their productivity. You can now scribble, draw or paint in vivid colour – without the mess. That’s a win-win. And, when it comes to the to-do lists and homework, GoodNotes 1 and Samsung Notes have got your organising covered.

Flipping between focal lengths is easy and the S20 FE takes good snaps at both ultra wide and 3x zoom. Neither of these are of the same quality as the main sensor and the results can be soft, especially when zooming, but they offer a nice bit of versatility. It’s also good to see Samsung not cramming in another sensor for the sake of it, some other brands offering cheaper Android phones should take note… Android 10’s key features include a system-wide Dark Mode, which you can enable from the Settings menu, Digital Wellbeing tools, and ‘Bubbles’ that enable you to display messages from communication apps over other apps that you have open. The ‘FE’ moniker here stands for ‘Fan Edition’ and it’s very much a cheaper, mid-year update for the brand’s flagship Galaxy S20 – with a bit of the Note 20’s DNA thrown in for good measure. It looks like it will continue to be sold alongside the Samsung Galaxy S21 in many regions. Firstly, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is bigger than the S20, with dimensions of 159.8 x 74.5 x 8.4mm (that’s 8.1 x 5.4 x 0.5mm more than the S20). Secondly, the edges of the screen don’t curve at all, so the phone doesn’t feel as comfortable in the hand – although given how that design feature can be quite divisive, some may not mind that they’re missing out.The 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, while the 4G version uses Samsung’s own Exynos 990. Both are top-end chipsets (while there is a 865 Plus, it’s more a gaming-oriented upgrade), but we’ve found that Snapdragon 8-series processors typically outperform their Exynos counterparts. The Night mode here is particularly useful, as it utilizes the main camera’s large sensor to take in lots of light in low-light settings. It’s pretty easy to use, as you don’t have to hold the phone still for too long, as some night modes require you to do, and the resulting pictures are pretty well-lit.

Its score of 12,705 on the PCMark Work 2.0 benchmark is on par with the S20 series, and its Geekbench scores of 862 single-core, 3,069 multi-core are slightly below the S20 series, but not enough to matter. GFXBench graphics benchmark scores are also on par with the other S20 phones, running at 45fps for the Car Chase onscreen benchmark.

Estimated against the usage profile of an average/typical user. Independently assessed by Strategy Analytics between 2021.12.08–12.20 in USA and UK with pre-release versions of SM-S901, SM-S906, SM-S908 under default setting using 5G Sub6 networks (NOT tested under 5G mmWave network). Actual battery life varies by network environment, features and apps used, frequency of calls and messages, number of times charged, and many other factors. It comes in a number of nice colours too, including a very on-trend navy blue and a striking red. These are far more interesting hues than you can find the S20 in, and Samsung said they all be available from various networks without the usual exclusivity. If you’re looking for comfort, rich audio and intuitive control at a great price, you’ll love the Galaxy Buds FE. The camera interface remains the same as on any other premium Samsung phone running One UI 3.1. There are easily accessible controls that let you adjust the aspect ratio, timer, and flash, and switch between cameras. The list of default modes is customisable and the slots can be swapped and personalised as per a user's requirements.
