I wanted to capture the simple circular work of Byrne's pencils which seem easy, until you go real-world with it. The mask is the most important element of Doom. I discovered that with paper mache over a clay sculpt, followed by craft foam details and metal brads as rivets, I could properly mimic a Byrne-style 3D version of Doom's death's head visage. Lastly, Add cut out a place for your nose, add the nose itself and skin it. Now you can take your glue and add “rivets” around the eyes, nose, and mouth area. (pic T) Doom would never elevate the importance of his enemies by adorning himself with reminders of them... but he has shrunk adversaries before, as well as trapped them within a metallic coating.

You can choose to spray or paint them. If you do this route, i suggest hand painting, because you will have a better chance of matching your shoes to your actual costume. If you do this, those shoes are now deemed your “costume shoes” FOREVER! Sadly for Doom, his face was scarred and disfigured horribly due to a science experiment run amok. As a result, he wears a chrome armored mask over his face. Though I keep Doom's armor close to the comics, sleek, unadorned by etchings, symbols or scalloped plates, I want my cosplays to tell a story, offering history or insight into the character.

The sculpt is based on Byrne's cover for Fantastic Four #259, an image I wasted no time paying homage to once the cosplay was completed, with the help of a few of my Marvel Legends action figures. This combo makes for a gorgeous, weathered look, but it's not quite appropriate for this character, whose armor is carefully, dutifully tended and polished every day. In many ways, Victor Von Doom is similar to certain tragic figures of ancient Greek folklore; a man felled by hubris and continually in pursuit of his own mythology. His armor is an extension of the mask he wears to shield his scarred face because, proud as he is, he cannot bear to be seen. He’s a man of contradiction and his design reflects that: medieval and modern, scientist and sorcerer, pariah and protector, friend and foe. Those things that seem preposterous or inauthentic about his appearance are in fact the very aspects that make him so compelling. (pic S) i found a piece of grated plastic.. the stuff that holds oranges or onions. i glued that in for a mouth to help with breathing while still giving a metal look.
