About this deal

I spend a lot of time playing with people new to tabletop RPGs. I love introducing the genre. It’s a passion of mine to help people find passion in tabletop gaming. The bottom line for me when it comes to Zweihander is that due to its complexity, it’s just not the game I would ever introduce to a first-time tabletop gamer. The lore in Zweihander is great, which contributes to game flow. However, combat is slow. Plus, this is overall the most realistic TTRPG that I’ve ever seen. The real question is whether the realism is a positive or negative for game flow. Your personal answer to that question might just decide whether or not this game is for you and your gaming group. Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: As noted, cynical. Although not as cynical as say, 40k. The random roles system will provide players with less of a party of adventurers than a band of ugly thugs. Combat is brutal and a high-risk affair, a misroll during spell casting may consign your soul to hell. Firearms (of the general arquebus variety) are similarly risky; a misfire can easily kill a low to medium level character. More likely, however, is a misfire that destroys the weapon and all its ammunition... and that is pretty likely, but you can still earn your happy ending. The world may be doomed, but the village behind yon hill can still be saved.

The only challenge with finding a group to play Zweihander would be connecting with gamers who like this realistic style. But, go to your local gaming store, and you’re bound to find someone who’s heard of the game, and is willing to play. Should players ever feel unhappy with their roll, then they can choose to change their fortune to improve the result. However, changing fortunes also gives the GM a chance to use a misfortune to make a situation more dangerous whenever they want. Players can also choose to use a fate point to escape serious harm or even death. Despite the option to engage in combat, Zweihänder is an RPG that encourages players to investigate and use their eyes, ears and voices to discover the answers they need above all else. The subtitle for Zweihänder is “Grim & Perilous RPG” and honestly there’s no better way to describe it. It’s dense as treacle, dangerous as a raging fire and grimmer than a taxi queue at 3am, with a thoroughly old-school feel that will delight veteran gamers without driving away curious newcomers.

For everyone who worked to support the classic editions 'as is' dozens more emerged to take them into new direction. New genres, or infusing a new version with a different tone or tenor than the originals. All of this was possible because the use of open content placed no restrictions on the next author imagination. The main requirement being is that anything you use or is based on open content must also be open content along with retaining proper credit. The opening texts are topped off with some GM advice about keeping play moving and about creating house rules. This is the exact text that completes the section on house rules. In fact, the risks inherent to growing power are a near-constant theme throughout Zweihänder, as greater strengths also bring more chances for characters to grow corrupt and decadent. The entire game deliberate distances itself from the traditional Dungeons & Dragons power fantasy, from its risky approach to spellcasting to the lethality of its combat system. Absurdly Low Level Cap: Tiers are the closest thing to levels in Zweihänder, and the maximum is three. In doing these we will ensure that the next five thousand works are every bit as amazing as the first five thousand.

Gangbangers: The campaign seed Gangs of Kahabro adds the option of roleplaying medieval 'Work Gangs'. I also have less of a problem with CCPs if it is focused on a setting as opposed to a system. Inviting 3PP content to setting is more problematic than it is with RPG system so to keep the chain of ownership clear I can understand the need for draconian terms when a setting is involved. The Greater Demons of the Abyss are living symbols of the futility of fighting chaos. Their might is unmatched. Their threat is limitless. Each and every one of these foul beings have the power to bring low the greatest of mortal heroes. This is the first in a short series of articles on Zweihänder. If you missed the introductory post you can find it here. Maybe ‘funny’ is too strong a word, but still the examples are much more positive than the surrounding narrative texts. I will be interesting to see how the feel of the game proceeds.

Bat in the Attic Games

Characters advance by entering a series of professions that provide access to a series of new or improved skills and bonuses to primary attributes. The profession system reflects the late medieval/early Renaissance setting of the game and gives an idea of what a character might have been doing either before or during their adventures (such as a preacher, coachman, courtier, inquisitor, merchant lord, rat catcher or sellsword). Evil Virtues: All the Chaotic races, minus Formor, have some pretty positive cultural traits (Orx are brave and somewhat community-minded, Beastfolk loathe rape and accept outcastes - though appears to be retconning, and Skrazzak are utterly dedicated to their queens). I was basically sweating bullets as I started rolling again. Grievous injuries include such wonderful experiences as becoming a eunuch, losing a kidney, or becoming paralyzed in one or more limbs. Everyone watched as the dice came up a 99, and I consulted the chart. OSR isn’t just D&D. It may have started there, but there are numerous examples of games classified as OSR that aren’t D20-based

Greater-Scope Villain: The Abyssal Princes are the source of all the awful Chaos crap that's filtering into the Material World, but none of them are able to manifest directly into reality. Its their Mutant races and Chosen of Chaos servants that are rampaging in the world. Zweihander has lots of supplemental gaming material. It is very famous as it’s one of DriveThru RPGs top-selling games ever at over 90,000 copies. If you wanted to start a Zweihander campaign though, as I mentioned before, there’s so much lore in the core rulebook alone that you’d probably never even need supplemental books to keep a great story going. Zweihander Grim & Perilous RPG was released under Creative Commons License non-commercial. This means anyone can take, remix, reduce and create their own free content, unbound by a license. I am just going to refer to Zweihänder as Z from now on as I am going to use the games name so often that typing that umlaut on the a is just a pain in the arse.

Mars Needs Women: The Grendel (this game's Beastmen), the Formor and the Orx are a mostly male species. And all three of these will go and grab themselves humanoid women (not just human or elf - dwarf, gnomes and halflings work too) to make into sex slaves for reproduction. And the Orx don't even need to, they mainly reproduce by putting spores in corpses and they hate their halfbreed offspring Booguns - the sex slave part is just them asserting dominance. When you’re talking Zweihander, you’re talking gritty Viking lore. Overall, the game is very realistic, in terms of being a low-fantasy setting. However, there is also a hint of Viking/ Norse magic (there are ogre races, dwarves, elves, etc. for instance). The game is all about promoting roleplaying, as the designers feel that the act of roleplaying gets lost in many other tabletop RPGs. I agree with that sentiment. Also, the emphasis on roleplaying improves the overall presentation of Zweihander as everything in the book is customized for players to better roleplay their characters.

Z does the usual thing of a couple of paragraphs on what is a GM, what is a Player and what is an RPG. What this tells me is that Z is a cannibal game. It is not really committed to bringing in new players into the hobby but is going to get its audience from existing gamers, most probably the existing Warhammer world. For me, for writing community content, I do like a setting that’s definitely attached to the game. That’s because I am more likely to create a supplement about the setting than about the game. It’s just what I prefer to do (my first community content is 100 Rumours to Hear on Urth). However, if I was writing for the Miskatonic Repository I’d create Mythos tomes – because for one thing I already have. Once I have actually got around to reading Zweihänder I’ll have a better idea as to what inspires me.

Featured on Forbes.com, ranked one of the best-selling fantasy tabletop role-playing games at DriveThruRPG, and having sold over 90,000 copies worldwide, ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer, and grittier version of classical tabletop role-playing games. This revised edition is published in celebration with Andrews McMeel Publishing and features a refreshed layout, new artwork, rules clarifications, color plates by Dejan Mandic, and errata. Explosive Breeder: One reason why humans and other "benign" humanoid races are in dire peril. Most of the mutant races breed at an extremely fast pace. The Grendel and Orx reach sexual maturity at age 2!! But both of these races are also very long-lived and can still be impregnating people when they're centuries old. Worse yet, the Grendel's sex powers can puppet large harems of women to stay pregnant and keep pumping out halfbreeds, while the Orx can also reproduce asexually by infesting corpses with their spores. Meanwhile the Skrazzak have their queens that can squirt out large numbers of the rat-men. I like games better when the group glazes over details that are non-important to the game’s actual story – what I’m there to engage with in the first place. He was about to explain to them that he would pay them to help him reclaim his keep when the carriage stopped and a smarmy voice outside told everyone to freeze. Someone told NPC to look out, and I obliged by having him lean out the window, because the noble was supposed to be kinda naive. This is when the highwayman outside, also an NPC and therefore controlled by me, ruined this entire mission and half of the rest of the plot. I favor a form of permission that encourages sharing with the main conditions being that the recipient must share as well. I use the OGL or a Creative Common license because I know they have been vetted by attorneys and because I find their specific conditions align with the permissions I want to give for my works.
