About this deal

ANGELS OF CALIBAN starts off very strong with a prologue set during the Great Crusade to reunite the galaxy under the Emperor’s rule.

It had all the hallmarks of a defining conflict and Gav gave it a suitable air of gravitas and effect that lingered on for long after it was over and we moved into the final chapter. Thankfully, they are all part of the numbered series by now, and not exclusive to audio formats or event exclusive anthologies anymore. The eBook edition includes integrated illustrations of characters and events from the story, and an afterword that places the story in context within the series. And it brought back some great Luna Wolves characters like Tarik Torgaddon and Garviel Loken, whom I’ve missed enormously since they died during the betrayal at Istvaan III.

It was a pleasant surprise and I would certainly recommend picking it up even though I couldn't hand on heart say it was one of the best in the series. It actually makes me want to go back and read Angels of Darkness again because I want to see how far we’ve come in the last fifteen years and how Astelan has changed in that time.

Gav also weaved in events from his scattered short stories, like The Lion, which introduced us to Tuchulcha (who obviously appears again, and is creepy as ever, with some dialogue parallels to The Unforgiven), but also saw the execution of Nemiel, Zahariel's friend and cousin.

His brothers are rivals in some ways, and his gene-sons are wary of upsetting him, especially after learning of Nemiel's fate. Angels of Caliban by Gav Thorpe is the latest entry in the saga of The Lion, Primarch of the Dark Angels, as the Heresy continues to unfold. His works include the hugely popular Angels of Darkness, the Last Chancers series and the ongoing epic tale of The Sundering.

Perhaps, but the words of trust, of placing the future of the Legion in the hands of Luther, had been meant as spoken. I realize also that there’s some dissonance here, and those early chapters as Farith Redloss of the Dreadwing leads his brothers in a campaign to liberate the world of Zephath are pretty dense reading and can be confusing as Gav goes into details about the Dreadwing and their organization. My ‘Renegades’ mini-arc progresses through Renegades, the Rewards of Tolerance and Doubt Begets Heresy. And not only that, but we get some epic scenes involving Guilliman’s Imperium Secundus, the beginning of the fall as it were and get deeper into the mind of the Lion and those closest (and furthest) from him. Master of Sanctity – Annael, Telemenus, Grand Master Belial, Supreme Grand Master Azrael, Chaplain Asmodai, Chaplain Sapphon, Astelan.
