The famed director of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas has now fashioned a mammoth, four-hour drama, based on the book of the same name by David Grann, that explores the crisisthat befell the Osage Sioux Nation in the early 20th century. Having been manoeuvered onto impractical parcels of land by successive US government policies, the Osage then found themselves atop the most oil-rich area in the entire country. They told me I could have her for 10 days and I kept her the whole film, that’s how important she was to me – because I felt to tell this story, you’ve got to do it right. And how do you do that without a consultant who grew up within that culture and knew the nuance?’

In his review of the "meaty and demanding" film following its premiere at Cannes, Peter Debruge of Variety commended the story, characters and themes, but criticized the runtime: "In its present form, [ Killers of the Flower Moon] is still a compelling true story ... It's engrossing from the get-go, the palpable tension methodically echoed by Robbie Robertson's steady-heartbeat score. But it keeps going and going until everyone we care about is dead, dying or behind bars, with nearly an hour still in store". [81] Conversely, David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter opined, "The three-and-a-half-hour running time is fully justified in an escalating tragedy that never loosens its grip" and praised the screenplay, direction, cinematography, score, and cast performances (particularly that of Gladstone). Osage Nation elders bury a ceremonial pipe, mourning their descendants' assimilation into white American society. Wandering through their Oklahoma reservation, which features the annual "flower moon" phenomenon of fields of blooms, [18] several Osage find oil gushing from the ground. The tribe becomes wealthy, as it retains mineral rights and members share in oil-lease revenues, though law requires white court-appointed legal guardians to manage the money of full and half-blood members, assuming them "incompetent". Killers of the Flower Moon [a] is a 2023 American epic western crime drama film [7] directed and co-produced by Martin Scorsese, who also co-wrote the script alongside Eric Roth, based on the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann. [8] [9] Set in 1920s Oklahoma, it focuses on a series of murders of Osage members and relations in the Osage Nation after oil was discovered on tribal land. The tribal members had retained mineral rights on their reservation and White opportunists sought to gain their wealth. [10] Sharf, Zach (January 20, 2023). What to know

As performed by Gladstone and DiCaprio, the relationship between Mollie and Ernest has a kind of spiritual nausea; Ernest is sincere about his feelings for his wife, in his way, but they are part of a context of bad faith and violence. His real relationship is of course with his uncle, he is the beta to the older man’s alpha. Weirdly, DiCaprio starts to look like DeNiro, like a dog resembling its master: a younger, victim-villain version with the same gimlet-eyed fear and hostility and the same rat-trap mouth with the corners turned down. His uncle has inducted him into the Masons, and it is into the local masonic hall, with all its regalia, that Hale leads the wretched Ernest for a corporal punishment scene when the young man lets him down – the most extraordinary corporal punishment I have seen since Lindsay Anderson’s If…. Menta, Anna (October 20, 2023). " 'Killers of the Flower Moon' Ends With a Touching Dedication to Longtime Scorsese Collaborator Robbie Robertson". Decider. Archived from the original on October 21, 2023 . Retrieved October 21, 2023. Palast, Greg (October 20, 2023). "Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon describes the struggles of the Osage people. Here's why they are still fighting". The Guardian. Archived from the original on October 25, 2023 . Retrieved October 26, 2023. Scorsese presents a remarkable story, with an audacious framing device of a briskly insensitive “true crime” radio show featuring Osage characters crassly played by white actors. This is an utterly absorbing film, a story that Scorsese sees as a secret history of American power, a hidden violence epidemic polluting the water table of humanity.
