The game begins with the gamemaster reading the quest story from the perspective of Mentor, to set the scene for the game about to be played. I thought I was going a little overboard when I printed my customs with an icey-blue tint to them but that would fit perfectly with their overall theme here. Magic ice tiles have a little dandelion design instead of the generic text ("magic ice") placed over an ice tile, I can get behind that change. Considering the number of miniatures you get, it is a very compact box. It complements the base game nicely, making all monsters and companions easily accessible. In Hero Quest fashion, all items fit into plastic moulded compartments. It stops everything moving around in transit, but some miniatures can feel too snug and offer a small challenge to get out. In short, I am willing to accept the product as advertised to be a real thing. I will for my part, keep my expectations low on the quality of the edits and delivery dates. I suspect that we will receive a quest book largely unchanged beyond IP references re-written. I also do not expect the Frozen Horror expansion to be available at retail until perhaps this time next year. The rules are straightforward to get up to speed on, but given the small book, don’t expect too much room for pictures to break up the walls of text. The dwarf is the only character that can disarm traps without the aid of the specialized kit which is either bought in the armory or found during certain quests.Who knows if the prices are going to be changed (maybe allow them to be hired in 1-3, or give a discount on the retainer fee as in Wizards of Morcar?). Still the mere fact that the number has doubled would be a big help all by itself (the 1992 rules state heroes can hire as many as they can afford), as that's another 12 body points potentially added to the party (unlike the EU mercs, they can be healed if they are at 1 BP, to their max of 2... assuming they haven't been boosted in strength at all). So the party's overall strength would increase to (again if the numbers are unchanged) 49 from the 37 of the original if nothing else is changed.
