We've been trying loads out with our baby testers – and have selected the ones that kept them the most happy and entertained. These positions may be helpful if your baby does not like being directly on their tummy or has colic or reflux. The best part is there's a secret mirror built into the bottom, making for another "two in one" type multipurpose toy. When you picture a sweet, cuddly newborn, you probably see them wrapped in a blanket, on their back, in their parent's arms. As your little ones become aware of action and reaction, they will have fun wobbling their mirror and changing their reflection over and over again! This is like going to an aquarium and walking over one of those terrifying clear bridges, where you can see sharks swimming below you, but for babies. Emanuel is a fan of many Fat Brain Toys including this one as they attract the baby's attention easily. There is exactly one product that has entertained all four of my sons without fail during their tummy time sessions: Flappy the Elephant.The material is lightweight (our medium size is less than 3kg and our large size is under 5kg) so it’s easy to roll up and move around. Emanuel likes that it has eyes and gentle noise, and thinks that babies as young as 6 weeks old would enjoy the toy for those reasons.
Both of our experts recommend using a mirror during tummy time, as the baby will interact with themselves even if they don't yet know it's them in the reflection. The colours are bright and, in the opened-out tummy-time position, your baby can see that lovely, smiley caterpillar face. Baby’s heads are very soft and, if they are in one position more than others, they can develop a flat spot. What it is: A 44cm x 37cm tummy-time cushion, with a crinkle, sloth-faced playmat attached, that (when you press the music button) vibrates and plays (gentle) music for up to 10 minutes at a time. Direct sunlight or warm temperatures can cause the pattern to fade so make sure you always bring it back inside after use and gently wipe it down (more cleaning tips here). Why we love it: This is one of those toys where a picture doesn’t tell the whole story: the mummy elephant cushion is super-snuggly (our baby tester fell asleep on it), not too squidgy and very large – the largest in our list.
