About this deal

The brand's anatomic decoupling midsole and outsole comes as the design hallmark of the road shoe, allowing the shoe to move with the joints of the foot, instead of working against them, Hildebrand says. The rear collars are amply and comfortably padded without overdoing it and prevent any sensation of the dread top of knit upper collars flopping around sensation. The heel counter is semi rigid with its substance mostly it seems coming from the wrap around rear overlay extension of the mid foot cage. The entire mid foot to rear support array is one piece. The combination of rebound of the foam and the geometry delivers a ride on the more “natural” side with plenty of flexibility but also forefoot stability. Salomon’s geometry here combines a carefully designed anatomical decoupling (as in the prior Predict and Sonic) with independent platforms of support. All of this is clearly felt on the run as a lively, well cushioned if on the firm side ride with a clear sense the foot is in the action and not isolated from feel or natural motion yet also with clearly enough support. This is not the free and somewhat out of control (for me) ride of say Saucony’s Freedom 1-3 yet at the same time there is a similar, fun more natural ride. I’ve taken the Predict Soc 2 on several different runs, and I really didn’t know where the best spot in my rotation would be. I prefer something lighter and faster for workouts and something with a lot more cushion for easy runs. It’s a good option for daily and easy runs.

Sportsshoes athlete Jenny Nesbitt has also been putting the Salomon Predict 2 Road shoes to the test. Here’s what she has to say; Jeff: The updated midsole was the element I was mostly excited for, and found it a little disappointing. Infiniride is a nitrogen-infused TPU midsole that is literally hollowed out in areas to encourage flexibility as you run. In running shoes, I wear between a size 10-11 wide. I found the size 10.5 of the Predict Soc 2 to fit well. Salomon Predict Soc 2 Ride: The stretch knit upper is not overly snug over the top of the toes (looking at you Levitate 4) so not exactly high performance but adequate for most runs.

The midsole in the Salomon Predict Soc 2 also has decoupled grooves through the outsole, matching the grooves on the footbed. You can see them matching up. I was worried this might provide less stability, but you won’t really notice. The decoupled footbed allows for a more natural ride and lets your foot do what you want it to. I love that the shoe moves with your feet.

As mentioned, I’ve never tried many Salomon running shoes. The Salomon Predict Soc 2 is a decoupled road shoe. The upper was not well received in the first version, so it was completely overhauled. The knit upper worries me. I haven’t been a fan of it in the Brooks Levitate or Ultraboost. Theoretically, it should fit well, but usually, with the knit uppers, it feels tight or stiff. So I was excited to see Salomons take on it. According to Salomon, the updated Predict Soc 2 weighs about an ounce less. The tongue doesn’t have any additional padding, and the fit is a little awkward. There seems to be a little too much material around the tongue, so when the laces are pulled taut there’s extra tongue that folds in on itself. Jeff: The upper is made from a tightly knit mesh that’s almost like a bootie going forward, with a secondary layer over the midfoot that’s a soft cage.Go The Distance: Whether you love road running in your neighborhood, an escape to a local trail, or something more rugged, Salomon makes shoes that ensure you have a smooth ride on any and all terrain Jeff: Atreyu is the Texas startup base model is all about the basics, lightweight and unstructured upper, straightforward EVA midsole, and low cost. While lighter runners than I have raved about the Atreyu, I’ve enjoyed a number of my runs in it once I adjusted my expectations - yet it feels more cushioned than the Predict 2. The Predict 2 wins in durability (Atreyu has a completely exposed midsole) and fit and finish, but the Atreyu runs smoother, more cushioned, lighter, and literally half the cost.

While not the most modern foam Energy Cell + and a relatively soft, full coverage, well decoupled outsole deliver a lively energetic if somewhat firmer ride. Sam

Performance Comparison

Designed with maximum cushioning, although note, this is not a bulky shoe – the TPU-based Infiniride foam provides a smooth ride and this was one of the first things I noticed when I put them on. Designed to be a trainer you can wear multiple times a week, comfort and cushion are therefore key factors in my decision-making process! That said, for a super flexible midsole, there’s lots of inherent stability to the shoe. Even overpronators could wear this shoe without concern, though the shoe’s overall firmness likely plays a part of that. The toebox verticality is a slight issue, but the width is adequate. I found I had rubbing issues any time I went longer than four or five miles at a time, but I do have a slightly wider-than-normal foot. Jeff: This is one of the bigger shoe disappointments of the year so far. The original Predict could have used a little softer ride, and maybe a little more room up front, and this shoe got substantially firmer, harsher, and the toebox shrank in width and height Energy Cell+ foam here is decent but a bit dense in feel . The new Salomon Energy Surge foam with its airier bounce would easily have the shoe (with a non knit upper) challenging shoes such as Rebel v2.

While about as fine a knit upper as I have run, toe box foot hold while comfortable and decently secure is overly stretchy over the toes leading to some toe lift and side to side slip at fast paces. Sam Sam: Lighter with a very energetic, considerably bouncier supercritical foam midsole the Rebel is pure fun. This said it is less stable underfoot and doesn’t have the slower paces versatility of the SOC. It shines best at speed. As with others here the SOC upper is fine but doesn’t compare to the hold and performance of the Rebel’s for pure faster running. At faster paces the midsole (in conjunction with upper hold) seems to get a touch mushier than I would prefer up front but SOC always remains stable with an easy smooth flow with the platforms of support functioning independently but in concert. While a neutral shoe with a knit upper the platform is inherently stable but due to the knit upper more than anything probably not ideal for heavy pronators. Alfie Manthorpe has been busy putting the Salomon Predict 2 road running shoes to the test. Here he provides a detailed review of Salomon’s latest road running release; Sam: I never got along that well with the overly flexible often poorly held Freedoms 1-3. Too much work to keep things moving and the 4mm drop was felt as a low heel when tired. The Predict Soc 2 has some of the same vibe but is more stable, easier to move along, and more fun. Overall, I wouldn’t replace any of my daily mileage shoes with the Salomon Predict 2, but I would add it to my collection for those runs where I want a firm grounding and a fast return of the ground, for distances ranging from 3 to 8 miles. Compared to other brands, Salomon is a relative newcomer to the running shoe industry. The French ski outfitter was founded in 1947, but didn’t release its first running shoe, the Raid Race, until 2001.
