There are three different modes and two press pads. The first setting has a magnify glass, is like a guessing game. The second is a question mark which is a quiz mode for the child to play, the elephant asks for a specific fruit by giving a hint, like ‘which fruit has soft smooth skin. It gives lots of facts that cover the five senses. In quiz mode it makes the child think about different colours, numbers and more. The third setting has a music note, and this has twelve fun songs for the child to sing along. When I first opened the box and saw the Vtech Smellephant that has gorgeous large eyed smiling blue elephant that had a piece of fruit on his trunk. Immediately it was something I knew the little one was going to love him. An infant’s thinking skills are influenced by physical activity. Cognitive development is the change in abilities such as attention, memory, problem solving and language. Research has shown that infants’ thinking skills develop as they act on the world with their eyes, ears, hands, feet and mouth. Babies learn about the world when they reach, crawl, put objects in their mouths, and drop or bang toys to make a noise. These interactions with the physical world enable babies to begin to understand their surroundings. For example, placing an interesting toy just out of reach of babies stimulate their interest and encourages them to move.

Vtech products are always well made, and they have great learning while you play; they are great for playing with or without an adult. The company has a customer care that is helpful and you are able to get replacement parts should some get lost. The press pad on its hand lights up and when pressed it sings little songs linking to the fruit on its trunk. The press pad on its foot makes the hand pad light up and flash; it has sounds of different animals, these are his friends and will tell you some more little facts about that animal. It has five different animals, frog, lion, bird, tiger and monkey. The Smellephant has a magical trunk that can ‘smell’ the piece of fruit that is placed on his trunk. It come with five different pieces of fruit, grapes, orange, lemon, apple and strawberry. The elephant will cover its eyes with his large colourful ears and ask you to place a piece of fruit on the end of his trunk – these clip in easily and are fairly secure. It makes a sniffing noise to discover which fruit is on his trunk. It will then say the name of the fruit and tell you some facts like, colour, the amount of fruit (eg: grapes have five bobbles) and what it tastes like. The ‘peek-a-boo, I see you’ ears are super cute, the elephant will cover its eyes when trying to identify the different fruit. The Vtech Smellephant is aimed at children ages 18 months – 5 years; my personal opinion it is more for the younger aged child as by aged five it would be too young for them. Like many of these interactive toys the music and songs can become repetitive and annoying to adults, but I noticed that it has been a go to toy over and over again, bringing smiles and giggles. The wee one has been learning different words and tries to sing along. The peek a boo feature is the most loved and has now got the wee one covering his eyes too. As the elephant has an automatic turn off when not been played with has been great as it has saved battery life; it requires 4 x AA batteries.
