About this deal

Similarities exist elsewhere to other groups outside of the Hawkwind orbit: “The Right Stuff” is first cousin to Blue Oyster Cult’s aviation-themed “ME262,” while the riffs of “Widowmaker” reimagine Black Sabbath with brass. The vinyl release of Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters includes a 4 booklet with extensive liner notes. What can you say about an album that crosses space rock charge out with Monty Pythonistic skits -- except that it’s hazardous Rock with ever-darkening humour direct from the bi-polar brainpan of Hawkwind’s erratic vocalist/lyricist, Robert Calvert.

Musicians who appeared on the album include members of Hawkwind, The Pink Fairies, Brian Eno (although not credited as Eno), Arthur Brown and Adrian Wagner. I think this realistic theme is interesting subject for contrast of more abstract cosmic operas, though Hawkwind also has had political themes on their agenda. Recorded at about the same time as Calvert’s first and only studio release with Hawkwind during their tenure on United Artists, the “Urban Guerilla” / “Brainbox Pollution” single, Hawkwind all appear here (minus the recently-departed Dikmik. To put the quality of this album in context, I genuinely believe it is better than any Hawkwind album, a bold claim for sure, but one I will stand by. Why spend so much time putting something like this together, only to make a mistake on the important bit?And co-joined by Paul Rudolph (on 6 string and bass guitar), Twink, Arthur Brown, Adrian Wagner, Brian Eno, Vivian Stanshall and Jim Capaldi the result was a virtual Hawkwind EP peppered by spoken word skits and a two part Arthur Brown-tormenter, “The Song of The Gremlin.

Calvert must have felt a strong affinity with them as he too was unreliable, difficult to control and unstable as hell. Hawkwind has incorporated some of the songs in their live set through the years including "The Right Stuff", "Ejection", "The Widow Maker" and "The Song of the Gremlin" and they have also been recorded and included on several of their live albums and compilations. And admittedly it's the bonus tracks that have an immediacy, that the rest of the album may not have.the aerospaceage inferno I immediately compaired this to motorhead when recorded with hawkwind before the synthesiser was replaced when rerecorded by motorhead. Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is the solo debut by Robert Calvert, the former singer of the space-rock band Hawkwind. The spoken word parts do move the story along and are somewhat humorous in parts, but they also sadly reveal Calvert's crumbling mental state Oddly enough, Arthur Brown appears as the Gremlin who ultimately takes down the Starfighter's plane.
