About this deal

Readers who endure the extensive Lake Wobegon–style exposition that launches DeAngelis's second novel (where every witch is above average) will be rewarded with a moving and witty love story. Having displayed cannibalistic tendencies ever since she murdered her babysitter at the age of three, Maren evaded the consequences of her following incidents over the years thanks to Frank's cover-ups, with the duo often relocating, even as he grew increasingly anguished over his daughter's apparent lack of remorse. The film received positive reviews, with critics praising the performances of Russell, Chalamet, and Rylance, Guadagnino's direction, the cinematography, score, and fusion of genres. While I didn’t totally know what to expect when I started I didn’t think that I would be sucked into a story about cannibals.

I think the main reason that this book works for such a large audience is that the characters are very relatable. Lee tells Maren that he realized his father was also an eater when he bit Lee during their scuffle, and that he hid him away before feeding off him, tearfully confessing to enjoying the thrill the act gave him. Maren is unsettled by Sully, as he displays creepy mannerisms – especially when he uses his nose to identify scents. I’m not sure, but I *do* know that the book is a strange and twisted mix of ALL those elements, and I loved every demented moment of it. So I wrote this book to get people thinking about flesh-eating, and to get people thinking about themselves as predators.

This wasteful cannibalism of consuming empty calories without feeling full, could have easily been an allegory on consumerism. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity, for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her—how they judge her. Maren wants to get the old woman help, but Sully yells at her aggressively and tells her that whatever they "have" it needs to be fed.

By making the character “less certain, less assertive, and more doubtful and fragile,” Guadagnino said that the movie became “more mature” and less innocent than DeAngelis’ novel. A spellbinding book full of horrors wrapped in sweetness and longing and finding one's way in the world, or maybe it's the other way around. It’s a book that makes you feel things you don’t want to feel, and that stays with you long after you’ve finished it.Bones and All al cinema da domani il 23 novembre" [Bones and All in cinemas beginning tomorrow November 23].
