About this deal

The garden is divided by Moroccan planters. To the front there is a large Neptune dining table and chairs for more formal dining and to the rear there is a 6-person sofa, table and chairs for a more chilled out vibe. Between the living space and the kitchen/dining areas are a downstairs toilet and a utility area with washer/dryer. The entire downstairs floor area is basked in beautiful Amtico flooring and warmed by underfloor heating. The Alexander Ferguson story does eventually solve the mystery of the little girl buried under the house, but it unfolds so slowly and episodically that I found myself intrigued with it, so that I would feel unwillingly jerked into the present whenever chapters about Ruth appeared! At its close, this well-made, gentle novel offers a concrete illusion of simplicity - or, as VS Pritchett described the desired quality of a short story, "something glimpsed from the corner of the eye, in passing". Here, the vision is of a clear and fragile presence, and as with all the best works of fiction, it lingers.

When I was wee, my Nana, from Lewis, used to tell me stories of Selkies and seal people. My Grandpa, a sea captain, told me stories of mermaids. These tales have always fascinated me, and along with my mum's stories of her childhood holidays spent on Lewis have coloured some of my own writing, so this book was right up my street. Vast glass sliding doors span the dining and sitting area on the ground floor, leading out to a patio and shingle garden. The sea-facing rooms on the first floor feature glass doors and balconies, while the master bedroom on the top floor includes a spectacular tiered roof terrace, complete with fire pit and roof garden. In getting the Sea House up to snuff, the newcomers discover a small chest with a baby's skeleton inside. The infant's legs are fused together like a mermaid's, a fact that unsettles all manner of things in Ruth's troubled soul and prompts a search for further information. The only other title I have read by this author is Hideous Kinky and I have to admit I enjoyed it more than this one. I found it took me a long time to get into the story and appreciate how the two time periods linked together. I wanted to read more by Esther Freud as I'd loved her debut autobiographic novel "Hideous kinky", particularly the ambience and poetic style, and I was not disappointed in this novel: once again, Freud weaves her magic through her sensuous, graceful depiction of landscape, until in this present novel the landscape becomes the protagonist. I was hungry for this type of escapism and so I enjoyed this novel a great deal!

Reverend Ferguson believes Selkies exist, existed at one time, or evolved into early generations of the home population. He is trying to prove this through the dictates of scientific investigation, that rare man of the cloth with one foot firmly planted in the empirical world - a Spinozan, reconciling faith and fact. Large, well-equipped kitchen/diner opening seamlessly onto an extensive, Mediterranean style garden Although I really became involved in the book at the midpoint, I still only give it three stars as I just couldn't accept the sudden resolution to everyone's lives. That, perhaps, is more a defect of me as a reader than of the author, so I suggest my review not put off those willing to make it down the stretch. There's a lot to like in this novel, the author does an especially nice job of showing the beauty of the landscape. The story takes place on South Harris Island, which is one of the Hebrides Islands off the west coast of Scotland. I'm not a traveler but Elizabeth Gifford's descriptions made me want to see the islands myself. While reading I frequently searched the internet for images of the areas that she was describing, the photos were always gorgeous.

There is private parking for one car at the rear of the property plus on-street public parking outside the front of the house. Lily has rented a cottage and is working on a project about an architect, Klaus Lehmann. Lehmann is based on Ernst Freud, Esther's grandfather. Lily is researching the period after the war during which Max Meyer meets Klaus and his beautiful wife Elsa, and we learn in a separate narrative about a covert romance between Elsa and Max. The holiday home is just 3.5km from the small and vibrant coastal community of Maghery. The main attraction here is the wonderful Maghery Beach which faces out to the Atlantic Ocean and is overlooked by the dramatic Crohy Headland. The wider region around Maghery is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a variety of landscapes including beaches, islands, sea cliffs, caves, arches, hills, and lakes. Outdoor Activities For her tale of interplay between what has happened and what will, author Elisabeth Gifford developed three voices.

I'm glad I read this novel if only for the Selkie storyline. But I was disappointed in the work as a whole and wished the author had polished both the past and the present storylines equally.Ruth is determined to find out more about the baby and the trail soon leads to Reverend Alexander Ferguson who was a previous inhabitant of the house and also had a keen interest in mermaids. The story is divided into chapters narrated by Moira, the Reverend’s maid, Alexander and Ruth all battling their own demons. The apartment has a generous size master bedroom with fully fitted and built in "his and her" closets, and a plush en suite bathroom. There is also a further excellent size guest bedroom, and a main bathroom.

Whitstable is truly a seaside gem, more like a village by the sea than a town. It’s the perfect place to try out water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing. The Sea House nestles into the rugged coastal landscape and is designed to take full advantage of the wonderful sea views outside. There is a beautifully crafted modern kitchen with an adjacent dining area which enjoys panoramic sea views via a large window and glass patio doors. The dining area opens to the main living room via concertina style wood shutters. A Beautifully Restored Building A pity, but not a surprise. For this is a book about secrecy. The Sea House itself is not easy to find - there is a hidden house and even a hidden hut in Steerborough. And there is much buried history. Freud makes serious attempts to scratch beneath the surface but there is a sense that she prefers to leave mysteries undisturbed. Her book is, in part, a tribute to Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (the main character, a reluctant architect, is even called Lily) and Southwold supplies the necessary view. Freud writes with fluency but without Woolf's lyricism. This is East Anglian prose: flat but reflective and open as Suffolk's horizons. A lovely story and a really solid debut novel. I love a book with duality timelines, and even after reading only a few chapters I knew I was going to savor this book until the very end! Designed in a New England style, the bespoke Mark Wilkinson kitchen is an amalgamation of granite, maple and glass. Extremely well equipped for hosting large groups, there’s a double gas Aga with an integrated conventional Aga cooker and a gas hob. The Miele dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine and waste disposal unit will save precious time, and there’s a huge Amana fridge-freezer and Miele wine cooler for storage. Cook up a storm whilst you play your favourite tunes through the Bose iPod Bluetooth speaker or the Alexa Dot and take in the stunning sea views. There’s also a private staircase leading up to the master bedroom from the kitchen.

This sounded like my sort of book – the past intermingled with the present – but I found I couldn’t really care about any of the characters to any great extent. Ruth and Michael buy an old manse on the Hebridean island of Harris in a state of disrepair intending to renovate it and turn it into a B&B. They find the skeleton of a baby with its legs fused together in a shape reminiscent of a mermaid’s tail buried under the floorboards. The Sea House has recently undergone a significant renovation to be your true home-from-home, with all the added luxuries you’d expect. Everything from underfloor heated Amtico flooring, a wood (gas) burning stove fireplace, Loaf furniture throughout, hand-crafted ash doors, complete Grand Designs-style garden makeover to the best of kitchen appliances. There is the Reverend Ferguson, living in the late 19th century, who represents the English presence in Scotland while dramatizing the struggle to reconcile community mythologies with the cold, hard facts of science.
