The animated segments of this movie are probably the most famous if you ask people who have seen this movie, and for me this aspect of the film was the main draw as a kid. It also had tie-in video games, with a PC adventure game and Sega Genesis, SNES, and Game Boy platform games. What began as a young boy's quest for home and safety turns into a voyage of personal growth, friendship, and an appreciation for the power of books. One of them (an angry dragon) brought about a wave of gasps from the boys in my class when I used this in a book report at the age of 7 or 8.

But as there are many Greek giants it was hard to determine a specific story, so I didn’t include a reference. One scene involving a computer-generated dragon made from paint was used, a challenge for the filmmakers. This library seems to have books available by plot convenience, as Richard Tyler is saved from dropping to his doom by Fantasy’s wings, located in the generic shelves which seem to have everything stacked next to each other. Looking at Culkin’s film list, I found it strange his credits essentially disappear after 1994, and he doesn’t show up in a film again until 2003! Patrick Stewart as Adventure: A swashbuckling gold adventure fiction book resembling a stereotypical pirate. Adventure inspects several books including The Mysterious Island and Kidnapped before spotting 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and summoning the giant squid to help Richard get over his phobia of heights. The movie is and always will be an absolute favourite of mine and unjustly a underrated gem of the 90's.

I thought it would be about a boy, 10-year-old Richard, who meets the "pagemaster" at the library and they have a mission to save people or some such story. I was nearly torn apart by a crazy doctor, then I was made a slave by some mangy pirates, and eaten, GOT THAT… EATEN, by a fire-breathing dragon! Some others, especially in the LGBT community, rally around Matilda which starred Mara Wilson and Danny Devito, and there is a convincing case to be made for Matilda as a Roald Dahl adaptation plus the literary credibility it carries along with its source material.
