His history with addiction, and his estranged relationship with his family was explored really well here. Because I think it is a stunning, emotional, exceptionally well written contemporary with so many timely and important themes. Do not expect anything new or groundbreaking about making art but it did flesh out nicely Ely (and a bit) Wyatt as characters. The book served up some topics that weren't super familiar to me like religious trauma and addiction, but made those topics feel accessible enough for me to follow those parts of the book. The seedy elements in the book simply failed to work for me, but I'm certain others would enjoy the book more than I did.

He despairs at Corbyn’s intellectual emptiness yet also finds himself out of sympathy with the centre-left and their aggressive moral certainties. I think there was just too much going on for this to be considered a romance book, and I really wanted it to be a romance book.On top of all of that, the way religion played into this story was one of the rare exceptions to my rule of not loving religious themes. It was really cute watching him be awkward and shy around Ely (and god damn, he was great in the spice).

With a little creativity, ingenuity, and some elbow grease, you can create your own lighting arsenal to handle a multitude of situations. The always witty narrative emphasises the comedy caper element but the longer it went on I quickly realised that it was all too absurd for my palate. In scenes reminiscent of the Keystone Cops, there are chuckles galore, with some really interesting characters, not least Vince, the Greek Punch and Judy puppeteer, who's show is so violent and peppered with the worst profanities, that he manages not only to have the kids running away terrified, but their parents too!I did wish we got a little but more from him but that's the rooting for trans characters in me showing.
