Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. From inspirational adventures across the world, learning bike maintenance, or discovering nutrition for cycling . And they’ve put love into those bikes and it’s all an outward expression of some identity for themselves. It tells a fictional story inspired by the 1967 photo-book of the same name by Danny Lyon and stars an ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, and Norman Reedus. The second half of the book talks about his role as a team manager and the demands and pressures behind how to make a professional cycling team a success.

It’s a movie that has helped me try to fathom why,” as Nichols put it, “there’s darkness everywhere and there’s evil everywhere. The Bikeriders is one of the few, if not the only, non-sensationalized books having to do with outlaw motorcycle clubs. If you open the book having never heard of the race, you'll close it feeling incredibly educated on the first world war, cycling history, and knowing that you've never really had that hard a day on a bike. Finding the best cycling books for you will depend on a whole host of requirements, from what subject you are interested in, to period in history, or even authors.

In October 2018, Jeff Nichols revealed he had been thinking about making a biker film set in the 1960s for five years, although he did not at that stage have a script, and mentioned the idea on the set of his short film Long Way Back Home to Michael Shannon, who reportedly told him "You've been talking about that damn idea for so long. But it’s a middle-of-the-day face-to-face between Johnny and Kathy that presents the toughest challenge. A must read for anyone wanting to read a beautifully written account of how perseverance and following your heart is really all that matters.

While there's significant stage setting as to what was happening on each stage of the race, to set the scene each chapter, the the main fest is how the team survive the huge endurance event. It's worth noting that I also struggled with this when reading Wide-Eyed and Legless, so I can depend if you are good at retaining and juggling all the information. A factual biography of Eddy Merckx, arguably the greatest rider of all time, his early life and how he went on to dominated his rivals for 14 years as a professional cyclist. This is the best cycling book that tells the story of how Italy's most loved sporting greats excelled in winning races, being one of the only riders to challenge the now disgraced Lance Armstrong, and sadly met his end. If it’s something of a cliché by now that feelings are less easily expressed for men, it was certainly the case for this generation. How everyone other than Johnny pays their bills or spends their days is not Nichols’ concern; he’s operating on the level of myth with this collection of types, from the soft-spoken Cal (Boyd Holbrook) and Brucie (Damon Herriman) to the vivid nonconformity with which Shannon, a master of unhinged idiosyncrasy, imbues pinko-hating Zipco. Put in context of the mid-sixties, Danny Lyon fills an empty chasm left between 'The Wild One' and 'Easy Rider', documenting an important epoch of American subculture. Currently, he’s riding for the UCI Continental team Ribble Weldtite and working for Ineos Grenadiers as a race engineer, helping the team’s riders improve their aerodynamic performance. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over the course of a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group's unique way of life.

Reading after the tale of Marco Pantaini will make for auditable sighs and how did nothing get learnt.Back a year later to take on the challenge again, this story tells of how she made it up mountain passes, cascaded down the other side, got 20 minutes kip outside a village, and gave her all battling against self-doubt, confusion, sleep deprivation and desperation. It gives the foundation for understanding why the likes of David Millar and Thomas Dekker fell in to the dark side of performance enhancing drugs, better than they could do themselves in their own autobiographies. And it would be easy, and a tad lazy, to label The Bikeridersas a picture-book movie (Adam Stone’s cinematography is undeniably sublime) about pretty boys on their fast, gleaming choppers. The film is inspired by the photography of Danny Lyon, who was known for photographing outsider groups. The Bikeriders will also play a headline gala at the BFI London Film Festival on October 5, with subsequent showings October 6 and 9.
