Mama Miti is the story of a woman who worked to change her country one tree at a time. Napoli tells the story of Wangari Maathai as if she was a wise elder. While this works within the story, the fact that she is a well educated woman with a PhD might have been worked into the story to emphasize the importance of education imo. The writing is lyrical. They cut down forests for timber and clear land for coffee plantations.I didn't like Kadir Nelson's illustrations in this book as much as I've liked his illustrations for other books. However, the text was beautiful. Remind students that throughout the lesson, they listened to a text, acted out portions of the text, and discussed different places where people plant trees and why they plant them there. Ah, Dolly Parton... (happy sigh) A woman who has put millions of books into the hands of millions of children; invested her own money into saving the world from Covid-19, and who has never shied away from speaking about the poverty she and her family suffered as a child. But her true legacy, besides all the prizes and titles, are the preserved forests of Kenya and the inspiration of a whole generation of activists. Her core conviction was the connection of wellbeing of the nature and the wellbeing of human communities. Forests around springs and water sources protect the soil from eroding and the water from drying up. Consequently the communities living in that area have safe access to water.

Kadir Nelson's artwork is very different in this one compared to some of his others but I still LOVED it. The different textures just really made different parts of the pictures stand out. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.)?Remind students that they can show respect in many ways: for themselves, for others, and for materials.
