READ NEXT: The BEST soundbars of 2017: Boost your TV audio Sony UBP-X800 review: Performance and image quality With the Dolby Vision incorporated in the sony ubp x700, the picture quality is remarkable, bringing each scene to life with vibrant and striking color details. This feature makes your cinema experience more exciting than ever, ensuring an immersive and realistic picture quality. BT.2020 Color Spaces

As an avid movie lover, Chris was unable to turn away the 50-inch Samsung DLP TV that arrived at his door one day, thus launching him irrevocably into an obsession with home theater. Dissatisfied with the image quality of his new acquisition, Chris trained with the Imaging Science Foundation in 2006 and became a professional display calibrator. His ultimate theater desires were realized when he completed construction of a dedicated cinema/listening room in his home. Chris is extremely fortunate that his need for quality audio and video is shared and supported by his wife of over 25 years. Built to higher standards than many Blu-ray players, Sony uses construction techniques more usually reserved for high-end Hi-Fi. The casing features Sony’s unique Frame and Beam chassis for excellent vibration resistance. Reducing vibration gives the internal electronics an easier life, thereby reducing distortion. When it comes to video features, the UBP-X800M2 is the only one of the two to support Dolby Vision and HLG for HDR. The newer model is also the only one to feature 24p True Cinema and BRAVIA Mode. When it comes to weight, the newer UBP-X800M2 model is a little bit lighter when compared to the older UBP-X800.You will see again the progress bar x % on the TV. The x changes to 0 and goes up to 100 during the update process. Whilst the picture quality of the x800 is bright, saturated, and enhanced, the x700 feels more natural. With the x800 you will get glossy and rich picture quality, and an impressive display indeed but you will certainly miss the naturalistic look that you can get with the x700. Fans of streaming music will appreciate that the X800 also works with Spotify connect, projecting the album art and play count onto your TV screen while being controllable through your phone or tablet. If you don’t want to blast your favorite content throughout the living room, it also supports Bluetooth streaming for listening via wireless headphones. Performance As well as Blu-ray, DVD and CD, the Sony UBP-X800M2 plays a wide range of other discs. SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) and DVD-A discs can be played as well as audio discs recorded using FLAC, DSD, ALAC or AIFF formats. This gives the Sony the ability to excel with High Resolution music formats, lifting its sound quality well above most Blu-ray players.

Sonically, the Sony UBP-X800M2 is excellent. It handles its highest-quality sources – Hi-Res audio files and, especially, DVD-Audio and SACD discs – with so much aplomb and precision that it deserves to be partnered with as high-end an audio system as you can manage. The X800 really has been designed by Sony to be an all-singing all-dancing digital transport so it doesn't just play every disc format you can think of but just about every file format too. That means you can stream a host of video files via USB or your home network, including Xvid, WMV, MKV, MOV, AVI, AVCHD, MPEG2 and MPEG4. There's also Hi-Res Audio support from the likes of FLAC, ALAC and DSD (11.2MHz at two-channel), as well as support for WAV, AAC and MP3. The X800 includes the DSEE HX digital sound enhancement engine which upscales the frequency and dynamic range of MP3s and other compressed music – and even your CDs – to create a higher resolution experience. The UBP-X800 is unquestionably a superb all-round media player. Blu-ray picture quality is excellent, both with standard discs and UHD platters. Images are smooth and artfully precise. Universal audio disc support should also win it support in the hi-fi community. These include extra control options – including compatibility with the likes of Crestron, Savant and Control4 – and extra custom install-friendly connections such as IP control over Cat-5 or Wi-Fi, an RS-232C two-way control port, and an IR input. During the film’s second scene, in which muggle Jacob Kowalski goes to the bank, offering pastries to try and alleviate his financial woes, the emotion in both the bank manager’s steely refusal and Kowalski’s disappointing whisper is really quite expressive. The only advantages the UBP-X800 have is that it, unlike the UBP-X800M2, features screen mirroring in addition to 3D and Live streaming. It is true that the two models look quite alike at first sight, leaving difficulties for proper differentiation. Nevertheless, the x800 calls for a better and effective design when compared to the x700. The X800 is built for discs, after all, and it supports them all, including Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD (both video and audio) CD, and Super Audio CD. Basically, unless it’s a laserdisc, this thing will spin it and send the signal to your system with gorgeous fidelity. The player will turn off and restart automatically after the update is complete. Don't use or turn off the player until the update is complete. It looks good, has a great picture quality, and can keep up with the most difficult of tunes while keeping your foot tapping. With Christmas coming, Santa Claus is likely to see this player appear on a good number of wishlists.

If you own a projector or low-brightness TV, you may be pleased to hear that the X800M2 has a feature for converting HDR to SDR, so that you can enjoy the benefits of 4K Blu-ray’s extra resolution without having to worry about your display struggling with HDR. In fact, it turns out that the X800M2 boasts the same ultra-rigid “frame and beam” chassis design you get with Sony’s flagship X1100ES. This is intended to eliminate the tiny chassis vibrations and electrical interference that can impact sound quality.Should you use it as a network player, it’ll play virtually every audio and video filetype you can throw at it, including support for high-resolution audio at 24bit/96kHz resolution, along with everything from mp3 to ALAC formats. In fact, the X800 features the best audio processing Sony has ever put in an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, with special tools like the company’s DSEE HX (digital sound enhancement engine) that can upscale any audio — even lossy mp3s — to make it sound more dynamic and vibrant. Dan Baker/Digital Trends As well as UHD Blu-ray discs, the UBP-X800M2 also plays conventional (FHD 1080p) Blu-ray discs to a higher standard. Provided your TV accepts a UHD 4K signal, the Sony upscales the image to make use of its full resolution, giving improved detail and realism.

The BT.2020, also known as Rec. 2020 is a set of specifications that cover various aspects of video broadcasting for ultra-high-definition television. This technology allows access to a much wider range of colors, which means that the picture will have more saturated and realistic colors of different hues and contrasts. High-Resolution Audio As with all 4K Blu-ray players, the X800M2 can also play DVDs, HD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays and CDs, as well as the latest 4K platters. More surprisingly and impressively for its money, it can also play SACD and DVD-Audio discs – something its Panasonic UB820 is unable to do. First, remember to toggle the Dolby Vision option off and on, depending on whether or not you’re watching a Dolby Vision disc. This is important if you want to be sure of getting the best picture quality from your 4K Blu-rays.If the power went off while the update was in progress, turn the player on and try the update again.
