About this deal

Philips’ Ambilight-toting 43PUS7734 can be yours too – although admittedly it costs a chunk more than the Samsung. Or you could go in the other direction and have a glance at the Hisense H43B7500– it’s usefully cheaper than the UE43RU7020 but, then again, its shortcomings make it something of a false economy.

The interface can be a little sluggish, but not enough to induce fits of rage. While the Samsung TU7020 is SmartThings compatible, that doesn’t extend to operation of the TV or for set-up purpose, despite the TV indicating it can be used for the latter. The Samsung’s predictably short of bass weight – the relentless low-frequency wallop of The Lego Movie is no more than alluded to. What’s less likely, or justifiable, is the implacable hardness and coarseness of the 7020’s high frequency response. Doesn’t matter if it’s a DVD copy of Zoolander or a Netflix stream of What Happened, Miss Simone?, the Samsung’s top end is brittle and unyielding, requiring only mild abuse of the volume control to become coarse and tiring. It’s not a good look, and it spoils the rest of the experience just a little. Which is a great pity, because no one wants to choose between saving the planet or spoiling their viewing experience. in terms of detail fidelity and motion stability the 7020 looks a fair bit more expensive than it actually is – unless you’ve deployed ‘Eco’ mode. It makes one rather cynical about what the option is doing there in the first place.

The remote control, it turns out, isn’t the only way the Samsung gives away its position in the model hierarchy. It’s fitted with two full-range drivers, each in receipt of ten watts of power - but while there’s no doubting the clarity of the the 7020’s audio delivery, in most meaningful ways it’s impoverished. If price-related sacrifices are to be made, better they’re made here than down in the sections covering picture quality. And sure enough, while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way the UE43RU7020 is put together nor the materials from which it’s made, Samsung hasn’t exactly gone to town with the design of this TV.

If you’ve been hunting for a fairly affordable 43-inch 4K TV, you know you’re not exactly spoiled for choice – and if you want one from a brand with a bit of recent profile and traction, your selection is narrowed down even further. The RU7020’s 3840 x 2160 resolution is governed by Samsung’s UHD processor and, in general, it does a pretty decent job of employing all those pixels when the source material is of a lower resolution.

Plan Benefits

Flat and thin’ might be good news in a pizza base but it makes for an uncomfortable listening experience. Other TVs to consider Images upscaled by the Crystal Processor 4K are crisply defined and full of clarity. Fine detail is excellent; whether its textures, objects or faces – the Samsung TU7020 is fantastic at digging up detail. Motion is solid enough with the Picture Clarity settings, although movement can invoke a little judder with fast-moving content – the TU7020 has a less than grippy hold on NFL players when they’re grappling with each other. There is a slight but noticeable artefact that pops up across multiple sources, a slight purple outline around bodies in motion. While not outfitted with the fancier features of its more expensive siblings, the TU7020’s interface, app support and gaming are like what you’d see higher up the range.

The Samsung TU7020’s Crystal Display produces a pleasantly surprising performance. Colours in upscaled HD broadcasts have a natural appearance, far more subtle than more expensive TVs. Watching Countdown and the TU7020 gets the various blues of the set just right, the hues of darker and lighter blues well conveyed. The TV is supported by feet at either end, but at this size it shouldn’t pose a problem for placement on stands and tables. The feet offer sufficient clearance to slip a soundbar beneath if you have one or are considering getting one.At least Samsung hasn’t tried to disguise any of the plastics that comprise the bezel, the rear and the feet of the RU7020. The rear panel, with its cutaways for inputs and mains power lead, is pleasantly (if rather pointlessly) textured, while the smooth plastic bezel surrounding the screen is surprisingly (and happily) brief. The Game mode doesn’t support VRR, ALLM or 4K@120Hz, but activating it unleashes a class-leading 9.7ms of input lag. Just be sure to put Game mode on “Auto” so the TV automatically detects a connected games console or PC. Picture quality
