Aviation Cocktail – A Couple Cooks Classic Aviation Cocktail – A Couple Cooks

Recently, we watched the “How it’s Made” program on TV and they were showing how gin is produced. The main ingredient is juniper berry which has tart, floral, and unusual flavors. Each gin brand has its own proprietary formula for how they want to accentuate the characteristic flavor of their gin. The result is a delicate balance that allows the flavors and aromas to intermingle in perfect harmony. Takumi's aviation is made with gin, maraschino liqueur, parfait d'amour, and lemon juice. The drink was created by the Japanese bartender Takumi Watanabe. It was recorded in Gary Regan's The Joy of Mixology (2017). [8] Crème de Violette is an easy-to-drink floral liqueur that isn't overly complex. The subtle floral flavors made it easy for me to enjoy it from the first sip. However, I can imagine that the perfume, flowery aroma, and flavor might not be everyone's cup of tea. The famous Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette by Haus Alpine uses a base of Weinbrand (a Brandy distilled from grapes) and is flavored with Queen Charlotte and March violets growing in the Alps. After careful maceration of these native wildflowers, the liqueur is sweetened with cane sugar. This sweetener adds enough flavor to the liqueur that no additional flavorings from vanilla or fruits are needed. Tasting Notes Nose After crème de violette had been all but unavailable in the United States for decades, in mid-2007 Haus Alpenz began importing the Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette, which is made from Queen Charlotte and March violet flowers from the Alps. [1] Since then, other brands of crème de violette have arrived on the US market, e.g., The Bitter Truth from Europe.Perhaps you’re looking for a simple-but-impressive treat for a holiday or birthday party. Or maybe you just have a craving for fancy confections. Either way, you can try injecting a simple truffle recipe with a touch of perfumed violette liqueur. A couple of tablespoons is all that’s required to inject bittersweet chocolate with all the flavor and aroma of a bountiful springtime garden. But be warned: Add too much and it may be more reminiscent of a perfume counter. Try with Tempus Fugit Liqueur de Violettes. Violet Daiquiri: Combine 2 ounces white rum, 3/4 ounce simple syrup, 1/4 ounce violet liqueur, and 3/4 ounce lime juice. Shake with ice until chilled, then strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with lime or an edible flower. At the end of the day, it should be about what you like,” says Lafranconi. “Some people like their Aviation sweeter, some like it more sour, others more aromatic — it's all about experimenting.” It’s botanical lineup includes some interesting things like ginger and rose, but what comes through most prominently to me is crisp juniper and citrus. Butterfly pea flowers give the gin it’s characteristic color, which transforms from indigo to purple or pink when acids like citrus are mixed with it.

Crème de violette - Wikipedia

Marshall says that as the Aviation’s popularity grew, so too did demand for crème de violette, which prompted Eric Seed of Haus Alpenz to start importing a crème de violette into the U.S. — so bartenders could make a “proper" Aviation. If you aren’t able to find any violet liqueur or syrup, this recipe is still delicious when made with a lavender syrup. It’s not exactly the same, but lavender and peach are another stellar flavor combination that works great with gin. Violet liqueurs I recommend Crème de violette is a liqueur infused with the essence of violet flowers. The delicate blooms are macerated in a neutral spirit like vodka or grain alcohol, then sweetened with a hint of sugar and water. The end result? A sweet, deeply floral flavour paired with a rich purple hue that’s ideal for crafting truly memorable clinkers. This easy peach syrup requires no cooking and just a little patience. Toss some chopped peaches with sugar and let them sit until they become syrupy. Add a little water and voila. Get the Easy Fresh Peach Syrup recipe. The gin choice makes a big difference,” says David Yee, assistant manager at Columbus, Ohio’s Oddfellows Liquor Bar. From juniper-heavy London Dry to light and floral New Western, all styles are welcome in this drink, but the amount being added should be adjusted accordingly. If a drizzle of violet syrup on your cake isn’t quite enough for you, why not add a bit into the cake batter too? Whether using a box mix or your grandma’s tried and true cake recipe, add in one to two tablespoons of crème de violette to lend a hint of color and flavor. Of course, adjustments to quantity may need to be made. But once you’ve found the correct ration, it may prove more satisfying for your sweet tooth than a roll of Choward’s Violet Mints. Try with Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette. Try Your Hand at Violet Truffles Here I’ve used just a quarter of an ounce of violet liqueur. This is just enough to enjoy its intense floral flavor and to add some of its inky blue-purple color to the drink. Crème de violette is the forerunner to the liqueurs Parfait d'Amour and the American variation, Creme Yvette, both of which are decidedly different with pronounced vanilla and/or citrus flavors. When crème de violette is not available it is possible to use the Parfait Amour or creme Yvette to replicate the violet color in a drink, though the taste profile is quite different. [2]

Add all of your delicious liquid ingredients to the shaker and cover tightly with the lid. Step 3: Shake it upThe basic recipe of every Crème de Violette liqueur is quite similar. Violet flowers, petals, and buds are steeped in a spirit base like brandy or any other neutral spirit. Added sugar lends the liqueurs its sweet taste and an ideal texture. The exact recipes vary from product to product. Lafranconi is also not afraid to riff on the drink by including non-traditional ingredients. A bar spoon of St. Germain Elderflower liqueur can up the floral complexity, he says, while a splash of Prosecco creates a more approachable version — a sort of Aviation-French 75 hybrid. Never “float” the crème de violette. Violet Gin & Tonic: add 1/4 ounce (or even as little as a bar spoon) to 2 ounces of floral gin and 4-6 ounces of a premium tonic water such as Fever-Tree. I also like to add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice.
