Normal signs of glow plug failing would be engine cranking over but not starting and smoke coming from the exhaust, it may eventually start with a lot of smoke. It has probably been starting rough for a while and the air temperature has now dropped. The engine should start with a small squirt of Easystart (Ether) in the air intake. You can also test them with a ohm meter but you will need to disconnect each lead. They should all read about the same normally less than 5 ohm's, a failed plug will either be very high or open circuit.

To rule out issues with the car battery, you should also test it using a multimeter. Glow plugs only work correctly when they are supplied with the right voltage. So, set your multimeter to DC voltage. You should only need to measure about 13 Volts. However, if you get a reading of 1.0 or more, this means the multimeter isn’t working properly or that the resistance range is too high. Try setting it to the lowest setting and try again. 4. Test your car battery Pre-heat: increases the temperature of the cylinder charge within the combustion chamber prior to start up. As soon as the glow plug temperature has stabilised after their initial activation, they will be switched via PWM to prevent overheating.Connect the two leads of the multimeter together, making sure the metal clamps/pins on the leads touch each other, and record the result. If you are using a digital multimeter, the precise reading will appear across the screen. At this point you may be able to use your multimeter’s calibration function to adjust the reading to zero. It is best to use a digital multimeter for this test. A digital multimeter shows the exact number result of the test. An analog multimeter is harder to read because every possible result is listed at the top. [4] X Research source The glow plug control module determines the timing and electric current required by the glow plugs based on input from the Engine Control Unit; Glow plugs may be easy to reach depending on your vehicle configuration. They usually have a cap or connector covering them, so once located, remove this first. Look at the surrounds of the glow plug. If there is any rust, corrosion or loose-fittings (cover) then cleaning this might improve their performance. 6. Test your glow plugs
