About this deal

I turned down the music business when Brian Epstein asked me, ‘Did I want to be a pop star like me brother? The Scaffold’s career outlasted that of McGear’s brother’s band, their name kept in the public eye with the Liver Birds 70s TV sitcom theme and their farewell single, a gloriously lugubrious version of Dominic Behan’s Liverpool Lou (an excellent compilation of most of The Scaffold’s work is currently available, though a new collection is in the works – hopefully this one will contain their timelocked rarity, Decimal Five, a song designed to help sell decimalisation to the masses). It used to have a ball room, and other building that was demolished before I was born, whether they have anything to do with the song I don't know, maybe it was a smart choice of words to make the song sound good. So although West Ham are one of the few other clubs I kind of like, I'm afraid I hope they get well and truly stuffed this afternoon. I grew up in Aintree, near the Old Roan pub (1958-1977) and, even before the song came out, we kids referred to the disused railway line that ran past Aintree towards Southport as the Aintree Iron.

These were taken down to supply the munitions factories during World War Two, as were all the railings around the Aintree, Fazakerley, Walton, Bootle and other areas. Our kid said, ‘Don’t do that…’”The Aintree Iron is a line that has had many explanations, many of them quite unsavoury and attached to famous people. McGough's fellow Liverpool poet Adrian Henri was also a founding member of this early configuration. In this series of informative five-minute programmes, titled Decimal Five and shown on BBC1, their songs included such relevant lyrics as "Give more, get change" and "Use your old coppers in sixpenny lots".A Scaffold song that is both catchy as fuck and also has the simplicity of a kids tune is “Gin Gan Goolie. We give people around the world the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, earn money and protect the planet, by trading their unwanted books and media. The camera went past The Beatles, went past Billy Preston, so I sat down at this piano with the lid down and pretended to play it. A book leaves our collection of over seven million titles and begins a new chapter every two seconds, enabling more goods to be reused. Most people thought it meant the black bull area (mentioned in the article in the weblink) which is indeed an iron shaped group of buildings (Back Bull is a pub).

So, dear reader, take a few minutes somewhere between 3 - 5 GMT to send the Hammers your positive forces. The trio put on a concert to raise funds for the Nordic Church and Cultural Centre in Liverpool in October 2018. During the same period The Scaffold also recorded the darkly humorous theme tune to the British horror movie Burke And Hare, a version of which saw eventual release on The Scaffold at Abbey Road 1966-1971 (both versions of the song feature a prominent backing vocal from Vivian Stanshall, suggesting that the session may feature the same lineup of musicians as Do The Albert). Since then he has arguably maintained the highest-profile and most sustained post-Scaffold career, still appearing regularly as a vocal performer on British radio and television, and continuing to be a highly regarded poet and author.I said, ‘Yes, please’… We recorded Leave It at Abbey Road, sent it to New York and the Eastmans said, ‘Great, can you do an album? So, if Peter Jackson [director of the upcoming Let It Be documentary] reads your article, I’d like to see it, and see if I’m a member of the Fab Four!

Billy - I'd normally support a northern team over a southern team but, hey, there are domestic issues here . I once went to a supermarket in Liverpool on business, and as I got out of the car noticed that the building next door was surrounded by a 12ft security fence topped off with barbed wire and razor ribbon. The members of the Scaffold were originally part of a performing revue group known as The Liverpool One Fat Lady All Electric Show. This refers to " The Aintree Institute " on Longmoor Lane, where the Beatles and many other groups played during 1960's. Since initially disbanding in 1977, the group have occasionally re-formed for performances and projects.

I read somewhere that it was three pubs somewhere in Liverpool whose location together on the map was in the shape of a flat iron. He refused to cash in on his famous name, renaming himself firstly Mike Blank and then Mike McGear, in keeping with the argot of the day, and eschewed the easy route to Top Of The Pops stardom.
