About this deal

This essay was published in the May 1932 issue of Good Housekeeping (volume 21, issue 3). Woolf describes her experience of visiting St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Clement Danes. The rich diversity of the city’s theatre scene means there is always something to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a hot piece of new writing or a revival of a classic, London has something for you. The theatre buildings themselves are also awe-inspiring, with some having hosted plays for centuries. And it’s not just West End plays that are popular: you can also see London musicals , comedies and operas in some magnificent buildings. The sister restaurant of a Brighton original, Londoners should be thankful that the owners of The Coal Shed decided to bring their magic to London. Billing itself as a steak and seafood restaurant, this is hands down one of the best places to eat steak in London – a title for which there is stiff competition.

Everything on the menu displays Marchand’s skilled touch – expect Parisian food with more than a few international influences and go with an empty stomach.

The inconspicuous Bloomsbury restaurant, miles away from any other decent Chinese spots, serves up a menu of very traditional Sichuan cooking. Here too you’ll find nose-to-tail eating – except the Chinese we’re doing it long before St. John – that comes in the form of shareable dishes or hot pots loaded with skewered meat and veg. The stage shows are the stuff of lewd legend: Dita von Teese made her UK debut at TG; there are frequently hardcore body modification and manipulation demonstrations featuring everything from extreme piercings to contortion to people being suspended from ropes attached to hooks poked through their skin; and it’s not uncommon to see fireworks been set off from performers’ orifices, paint and milk being shot out of vaginas, and lasers shining from the bumhole of a trapeze artist. It’s a great date spot, particularly as when you’re finished you can pop down to the cheekily hidden secret bar “Hester’s Hideout” downstairs.

Sadly, so far, those directions have rarely taken them to London... with one exception. Eternals (2021) With the city spawning such a large number of internationally acclaimed comic minds, London plays as a battlefield for a huge number of comedians on the cusp of breaking through, battling it out against each other in strong competition. Even if there’s a spit roast happening in one corner and someone getting spanked in another, sexual activity is by no means obligatory. ‘I think people are surprised that they don't have to get naked,’ says Sayle. ‘And that actually, it’s not a bunch of sex-crazed weirdos – these are really cool people.’For the 1961 documentary film, see The London Scene (film). For the 2017 Chinese short story column, see The London Scene (short story column). From Crossbreed ’s queer fetish raves to The Fox Den ’s 24-guest hedonistic dinner parties (complete with a four-course meal cooked by a private chef and after-dinner ‘play’ for dessert), the choice of sex-positive events in London is as mind-boggling as it is arousing. And with everything from popular underground DJs to luxury sex toys on offer, it’s the perfect set-up for a new generation to lube up and join the ride. ‘It used to be that people would come to explore the scene in their thirties and forties, but now we are seeing much younger people in their twenties,’ says Sinead, who’s been involved in the sex-positive community since 2015 and launched The Fox Den in June last year.

The venue is in a residential area and has a premises licence which allows for alcohol and entertainment. It does not have a sexual entertainment licence or a licence that would allow for nudity or partial nudity.
