About this deal

And as Hanna’s subtle acts of cruelty threaten to tear her and Alex apart, Suzette fears her very life may be in grave danger.

Hanna didn't know that Suzette had resisted bringing her in for another CT scan — 500 times the radiation of a single X-ray — but relented to Alex's wishes. Ever since William March’s 1954 thriller “The Bad Seed” gave its name to the phenomenon, horror novels featuring creepy children have offered a lens that reflects darkly on our assumptions and anxieties about parenthood, putting a perverse twist on all the usual fears. In March’s book, Christine Penmark starts to have concerns about her 8-year-old daughter, Rhoda — outwardly docile and well behaved — after one of her classmates dies suspiciously on a class picnic. Content-wise, it was a tough book to get into because obviously, you are not going to care about this little girl-monster, and the archetypes were so glaring they seem to smack you in the face. Unlike the surfaces of her home, which she can scrub and polish until they are shiny and free from even the most minute imperfection, there is nothing she can do about the health issues that plague her and the developmental issues that manifest themselves in her daughter.

Most free hours are spent crocheting with my cat (in his presence - he sadly does not crochet), reading, and writing reviews. It made the tender part in her abdomen twist and squeal in protest and she fanned her fingers, trying to make herself relax.

Despite all of the well-meaning efforts of these adults, however, Hanna hasn’t developed as expected. She couldn't phrase it to him as a desperate need for her own time and space; she couldn't make it all about herself. The weird noises two streets over are a little quieter, and a little weirder, when muffled by the snow. This intelligent, unrelenting, layered shocker can stand proudly alongside classics like The Other and The Butcher Boy, with their ‘evil’ children uncannily reflecting our own sins. More than just a story about a creepy kid, Baby Teeth is a condemnation of modern American parenting and an intense examination of the circumstances that create monstrous children–who will grow to be monstrous adults–and the responsibility borne by the child, her parents, and even society at large.

It was pretty typical mom gives up career to be stay at home mom to weird child, who is clearly in need of professional help, while the husband pretends like everything is great and ignores the fact that his child barks at people, causes bodily harm to her mother and others, and sets fires. The level of disturbing unease over what those you love can hide from you gradually rises throughout the book, and gets EXTREMELY intense. Stage palpably conveys Suzette's fear, anger, frustration, and desperation while exploring the deleterious effects that motherhood can have on one's marriage and self-worth. Hanna also knows that her silence anguishes her mother, which is an added bonus; although Hanna adores her father, who believes she can do no wrong, she despises Suzette and torments her at every turn. A battle of wills between mother and daughter reveals the frailty and falsehood of familial bonds in award-winning playwright and filmmaker Zoje Stage’s tense novel of psychological suspense, Baby Teeth.

Baby Teeth is an unexpected LGBTQ+ novel in verse; it takes elements of horror and mixes them with romance, resulting in a changeling of a book that reimagines vampire myths for the twenty-first century. It was all so truncated and the answers we really wanted – the why behind Hannah (sociopath or psychopath) were never answered. The main characters are all well developed, and at various parts of the book you really care and sympathize with all of them. At first, I was excited to hear the perspective of a self-conscious mother and her sociopath seven-year-old. On the other hand I have a daughter, just graduated high school, with special needs who will likely be not far from my side for the rest of my natural life.
