Balance: Good idea but something falls short in execution. Sheep Dip is too flat without personality. Nose: Astringent note of lemon furniture polish assaults the nose first, with a musty overtone. By God this actually smells like sheep dip (or more likely sheep as my memories of sheep-related smells are in the distant past). No, that’s not a good thing. Lanolin (another sheep-related smell) and dry fungal – almost sulfury – malt arrive next. A rest in the glass dissipates these, leaving some pretty standard ex-bourbon notes of light caramel, nougat, honey, and vanilla.

Sheep Dip was first bottled by a gentleman farmer and publican as his in-house whisky around 1974. The pub was in Oldbury on Severn, and as its popularity grew with the locals, so the small concern of MJ Dowdeswell & Co Ltd grew. It eventually managed to supply the likes of Fortnum & Mason and enter the US, Canada and New Zealand markets. The first incarnation of Sheep Dip whisky was Original Oldbury Sheep Dip, an 8-year-old blend of 16 single malts. The quaint and intriguing name was allegedly (I’ll repeat that, allegedly) chosen to ensure that West Country farmers could put invoices for cases of it through their books without accountants noticing. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. We are involved in what is known as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Edinburgh’s Heriot Watt University, which offers brewing and distilling degree courses, and all our distillers are graduates of the university. With Heriot Watt we’ve developed a strong understanding of botanicals, and are developing a botanical dictionary, if you like, of which botanicals give exactly what effects. It’s a science. We did a lot of work on wood finishes when I was with Glenmorangie, and that was all much less specific than the use of botanicals. You had all the variables of oak.It had always been an ambition of mine to produce a really top quality gin, and we launched Edinburgh Gin in 2010, originally with a small distillery in Edinburgh’s Rutland Place, which also has visitor facilities. We now have a second, larger distillery in Edinburgh as well, and are really getting lots of traction with the brand. Brand extensions have so far included Sheep Dip Islay, 1999 Amoroso Oloroso and 1990 Old Hebridean variations. Richard Paterson, Scotland's renowned and only third generation master blender created the Sheep Dip vatting by marrying together several single malt whiskies. The whiskies are aged between eight and twelve years in quality first fill wood, each adding unique characteristics to produce an exceptional product. The recipe of 16 Highland and Speyside malts is said to have stayed the same since its inception, and although it doesn’t carry an age statement, it’s claimed the malts used are up to 20 years old. Despite the use of mature whiskies, Sheep Dip is still a sprightly blended malt, with a floral nose and malty, warming character. You are responsible for all activities through your account.
