If I have communicated anything in this book, I hope above all that it has been something of wonder not only of these fabulous beasts but of all the beasts, birds, and fishes that inhabit the Earth. Information aside, the real "treasures", however, lie inside a lattice-fronted, die-cut cabinet of curiosities set deep inside the back cover. A fabulous tome for those who love legendary beasts that still wander among us, this lush and luxurious look at an astounding array of creatures offers everything a true believer would want to know.

You even get to open Pandora's box, and there's a little pouch containing facsimiles of the oak leaves of the Oracle. The more beady-eyed readers among you will have noticed that there are a couple of more conventional ologies in the mix: Egyptology and Mythology, and herein lies the rub.Drake is keen to show that these little-known beasts must also be studied and understood rather than shunned. My only regret is that because of how many species there are and how short the book is, it couldn't go into greater detail about the races. It's an exciting and innovative way of getting someone interested in the subject and I, for one, would have been totally absorbed by it as a boy. Medusa’s perpetual bad hair days, not to mention the hairiness of the Sasquatch and the female werewolf, are exploited with glee, and a recurring editorial comment is “Gross!

This book is as detailed as any of the previous installments and is a must for any fan of the series. I would give "Monsterology The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts" by Ernest Drake a 4-star review because, 1; I really like the illustrations and the information 2; I like how the author covers various creatures 3; I honestly forgot that these creatures are fictional while reading which I loved but 4; I really wish that is was longer and there were more information in this book.

The purple, man-eating, burrowing giant worm known as the Mongolian death worm," for example, is fake according to Dr. Ernest Drake was determined to bring the subject of dragons under the burgeoning umbrella of the nineteenth-century natural sciences. The book was part textbook style, talking about the creatures lives, diets, health and more, and part travel guide where the monsterologist discusses his travels looking for these monsters. Helen Ward trained as an illustrator at Brighton School of Art, under the direction of well-known children's illustrators such as Raymond Briggs, Justin Todd, Chris McEwan and John Vernon Lord. While the 15 monsters profiled come from the Western tradition, their homes range from ancient Egypt to Russia to Haiti, with an occasional nod to Asian and North American native traditions as well. This was a highly entertaining book that discussed many common mythological monsters, as well as those that are still commonly talked about today such as kraken's and sea serpents.

Review by my granson as the book is his:Following on from the Dragonology set of merchandise this is in the same ilk.
