The movie expected to turn the critical and commercial tide for them is The Batman. Another reboot for the iconic Caped Crusader completely set apart from the DCEU, it stars Robert Pattinson in the lead role and sees his Batman face off against Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and the big bad of the movie The Riddler (Paul Dano). In that sense, Another Real-World, Mafia/Politicians-Centric Batman But Even Darker and Grittier played not just to cultural amnesia (Bruce Wayne does plenty of detective work in earlier Batman movies) but to the lure of nostalgia in these grim times. Ditto the explicit genre appropriation from films like Se7en and Saw, while also seeming fresh/unique to those less exposed to its fair game cinematic inspirations ( like Klute). That’s not necessarily a criticism, as A) money is money, B) I at least liked The Batman more than the first Saw (however, Saw VI > The Batman) and C) I adore Return of Xander Cage. However, there’s a case to be made that the film’s (arguable) familiarity in terms of its more recent genre appropriations and in the Chris Nolan Dark Knight trilogy was not a metaphorical handicap but an implicit positive variable.

Batman, can you spare a dime? For the past year the Dark Knight’s wallet hasn’t been what it once was. After the events of 2020’s “Joker War,” Bruce Wayne lost his fortune, he’s been ousted from his company, and Wayne Manor has been repossessed, turning him into a Batman on a budget. With the conclusion of “Fear State,” Batman is now one year into this new status quo, which means it’s the perfect time to grade his performance. Is the Caped Crusader more effective as a hero without his money? How has he adapted to his new financial challenges? The problem with this resentment, however, is that The Batman’s situation isn’t remotely comparable to either The Dark Knight Rises or Batman v Superman, for many reasons. It’s a good joke, but I think after the past year we can say that being rich isn’t Batman’s superpower, his ability to adapt is. I was going to write about my predictions, but it looks like the race is about to be over. On the Republicans side, if Trump gets more than 50% of the delegates, then he has won. It will be too late to stop him. If he gets less than 40%, then it becomes a real race again. If the polling is correct, then he will get closer to 50% than 40%. On the Democratic side, Sanders needs at least 45% of the delegates, or it is over for him. Anything less than that and Hillary Clinton will have too big a lead to overcome. If the South Carolina result is an indicator, Hillary Clinton could get two-thirds of the delegates awarded tonight.Doctor Strange was the first time that magic was really strongly introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and some thought the film was a bit of a risk as a result. Instead, the film became the second biggest introductory film in the MCU, behind only Guardians of the Galaxy. Is it as good as its box office numbers would suggest? Or has the MCU become self-sustaining generating hundreds of million of dollars regardless of quality? So, how Batman has been operating without his wealth in the past year? One of the biggest challenges has been setting up micro-Batcaves throughout the city. Wayne Manor was built above a large natural cave, but most cities aren’t known for having huge caverns under their streets. As a result, Bruce had to build a new Batcave himself in Detective Comics #1034. It took him three days of digging, and by the end of it, Bruce commented, “I never truly understood what it means to work in a cave.”

The Batman is now in movie theaters, but is it a success or a flop? How is it performing at the box office so far and how is it expected to perform this opening weekend? It’s no surprise, but welcome news nonetheless, that this week’s arrival of The Batman in 4,417 locations puts the film not only as the widest release of the week, but puts it in 13th place among the widest releases of all time, nestled between two animated sequels— Frozen II and Incredibles 2—which debuted in 4,440 and 4,410 theaters respectively. As the only wide release to debut this week, the latest in the Batman franchise also eclipses last year’s No Time to Die (4,407 theaters), and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s 4,336 locations to become the widest release of the (post-)pandemic era.
