It turns out that Britain’s very particular relationship with baked goods is reminiscent of a certain British suspicion of television. Critics, he complained, “reacted to entertainment rather as one suspected they did to sex or rich food, [with] Anglo-Saxon distaste for something done purely for pleasure”.
