About this deal

A bit of a bug bare on the Genius and other models too is that you never know quite how much power is left, is it 20%, 15% or 7% left? The dual handle version comes with 2 handles, but it does not come with 2 travel cases or charging stands. You do get an additional brush head (1 x CrossAction) included in the box. So, both models come with a place to store brush heads, but the compartment with the 9000 is better than the stand offered with the Smart 6. While Oral-B has partnered with schemes such as TerraCycle in some countries, it does not yet have its own recycling scheme for used brush heads or faulty products.

A smaller and final difference between the two models is the colour of the brush handles, or more precisely the rubber grip that runs down the front of it. Place these brushes side by side and it is almost impossible to tell the difference between each of them.Box contents– A great box contents. You have almost everything you could need or want here to get up and running and make the most of what that Genius brush can offer. Smaller and less unsightly, it is designed to sit on a worktop rather than adhere to a wall or mirror. You just need to pop your phone in it, which takes a couple of seconds compared to the tens of seconds with the Genius brush configuration. You phone then sits in portrait or landscape orientation and shows the on-screen timer. Whilst a toothbrush plays a vital role in oral hygiene the routine and way in which you clean does too. This app makes it easy to see and represent in real-time just how good, or bad you are doing. Put these two brushes side by side and the differences between them are much harder to tell, they look almost identical, however there are some subtle differences. It’s a bit of a hassle as you need to stand almost perfectly still in front of your camera and a smartphone holder like this is not what most of us want in a bathroom.

Having now covered these key differences, let’s’ look in more detail at all of these and more to see what the brush is really like to use on a day to day basis. The battery status icons flashes when low. The flashing helps but a percentage guide would be useful, but I have yet to see a brush that offers this. I would have thought that the partnership with the app would have allowed this, but sadly no evidence of this. An idea for a future update? One of the biggest differences is that the Pro 2 2000, which is the more premium model offers an extra cleaning mode. The other big plus with the iO Series 9 is charging. You get not only two weeks’ worth of charge in just under three hours, but also a slimline travel case that allows you to charge the brush while in-situ. While it’s due to be superseded by the new iO Series 10, this is not just the best Oral-B toothbrush, but the best electric toothbrush you can buy. Even with my desire to make it work it has taken over a week to get close and I still don't find it perfect. From that I feel that for most the effort for the reward is too high.

The best Oral-B electric toothbrushes to buy in 2023

Pro Series: Oral-B’s affordable, mainstream brushes. These bring in the 3D action, with micro vibrations, oscillation and rotation for a better clean, along with pressure alerts and a lithium-ion battery (on most models). The great number of choices you have within the Oral-B range can make it really quite difficult to decide which toothbrush is right for you. The Oral-B Pro Genius 8000 falls behind with five cleaning modes: Daily Clean, Professional Clean, Sensitive, Whitening, and Gum Care. Maintaining gum health is an important part of a healthy oral care routine. The Triple Pressure Sensor helps protect your gums from over-brushing. The SmartRing illuminates and pulsations slow, then stop when you brush too hard. The brush handle can also be set to the Sensitive mode. You have a dedicated cleaning mode button too. Press this to change cleaning modes on the 9000. With the 5000 you have to press the power button multiple times.

A new magnetic charger means the brush can be recharged in as little as 3 hours, rather than the more typical 12. The Cross Action brush head relies on hundreds of bristles that are angled in different directions. It has been scientifically engineered, to ensure the bristles cross over different parts of the tooth surface more effectively than those brush heads that have standard straight bristles.Due to my mirror position and my height, during use the only practical position was virtually in the middle of the mirror, which is a bit daft when you want to use the mirror for other things such as looking at yourself whilst doing your hair. You have a smartphone holder in the way unless you move it. READ NEXT: The best electric toothbrushes to buy Are all Oral-B brushes compatible with the same brush heads? Battery life isn’t up there with some Sonicare models – you’re looking at a recharge roughly every three weeks – but if you want the latest and greatest toothbrush tech for less, there’s no better buy. What do we mean? Well in the box comes a smartphone holder with the Genius 9000. It has a suction cup on it that needs to attach to a mirror or wall in your bathroom. You put your smartphone in before brushing, stand in front of it and the app, camera, and brush work together to give you this data. Lasting up to 16 days or 66 minutes in our testing, that is an extra 4 days or 16 minutes of usage time. Smart 6 6000 vs Genius 9000

The Genius range of brushes offer Bluetooth connectivity, this is something that has been available from 2014 on select Oral-B brushes (see Pro 6000 review), but it has been improved with Genius to take things to the next level. It seems like an aesthetic addition of little value, but we have to add that it is much more than that. The location of the SmartRing is not arbitrary, but is located at a point from which it is always visible during brushing. Why? Well, because this ring of light will warn you if you are applying excessive pressure on your teeth. With regards to the Genius 8000 specifically; it has an extensive box contents which adds to the overall size of the box and the total weight. Some of these items are potentially not necessary. What I can’t really get my head around is why there is no icon for the Daily Clean mode. OK, it is the default mode but why exclude it from the icons and have one for every other mode? The Smart 6 travel case is better than some of the cheaper models. It is a white colour and is fairly robust.
