About this deal

I have had this lens now for one week and have the same issues that you have been complaining about with my d7000 and d5100.

Used Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART - Canon EF-S Fit - MPB

This lens opens new possibilities for owners of APS-C format cameras for low light shooting and creative use of depth of field with a fast f/1. My fear is that there may be significant sample variation, and with my luck I'd get on on the left end of the distribution. It is a wide aperture, standard zoom-lens for digital single lens reflex camera’s with APS-C size sensor’s.

Put this lens on an a6000, or any other camera that uses phase detect on the sensor, and there will be no focus issues! When tested on the same camera, the zoom may be just fractionally less sharp at large apertures, but you probably wouldn't see any difference in real world shooting. The zoom ring is smooth and has some nice resistance to it, while the focus ring is also very smooth, albeit with a little less resistance. However, as someone who's never found portraiture that satisfying at the 75mm equivalent that a 50mm lens gives on APS-C, my preference would be to switch to a different, dedicated lens on either format. So to move from close focus to infinity, you would have to rotate the focus ring counter clock-wise.However, there are also plenty of differences between the two models, especially in terms of camera and imaging features. While it might seem a little unusual, the lenses (all high speed models) reflect the state of the art in that format and when mounted on an APS-C DSLR offer the same angle of view (at each focal length) as the Sigma. I find that the 50mm tries harder on a difficult subject but gets it right while this one confirms focus quickly and often gets it wrong.

Despite Sigma giving us a list of ways in which this sample's build may not match up to final production standards, it still feels very nicely put together, with both the focus and zoom rings giving a smooth, positive feel. Similar to many Nikkor lenses, there is a switch on the side of the barrel that allows to move the lens from autofocus to manual focus operation. That said, it certainly does feel front-heavy when mounted on lightweight DX cameras like Nikon D5300.
