About this deal

It's really strange that you cannot watch a third while recording two. I think Manhattan have made a bad mistake seeing as most other PVR's have this function. HD channels are crisp and vibrant. The TR-R excavated detail from Bodyguard's murkier scenes while visually complex props like computer displays were well-rendered. In comparison, standard-def channels are soft and pallid. With SD or HD, motion is smooth with no untoward judder provided the source material is up to it. The instruction text in the Channels Editor (e.g. used for editing Favourites) could incorrectly say ‘select channel’ when it should say ‘deselect channel’ and vice versa. The remote is laid out clearly with reasonably sized buttons that have a reassuring feel to them when pressed.

The file system has been updated to make it resilient to corruption caused by unexpected interruptions (e.g. power loss) during asynchronous data transfer.Since the T2-R doesn’t support streaming apps, you might wonder what the Ethernet and USB ports are for. For some reason, the “Get Started” manual ignores these ports, but an added leaflet explains that they’re used to update the box’ software. There used to be an over-the-air Freeview updating service called “The Engineering Channel”, but it was shut down this year – so having another way to update the T2-R software is good.

One thing to remember about Freeview recordings, is that the recording is as good as your reception. So if the reception goes bad – for example if you move your aerial, or during a bad thunderstorm – you’ll find out later that you have a stuttering, garbled recording. When retune events were signalled by the broadcasters you could be prompted to retune more frequently than necessary.

Manhattan T2-R Freeview PVR review

After discussion with Arqiva (who manage the UK’s broadcast infrastructure), we implemented improved behaviour on our latest T3-R model. This behaviour has now replaced the Automatic Service Update on the T2-R:

Ensure your aerial is connected to your T2•R and an HDMI or AV cable is connected from your T1 to your TV. When you turn your T2•R on for the first time after it has updated, a message will be displayed confirming the update has taken place successfullyIf your T2•R is connected to the internet and left in standby, it will update automatically overnight, unless you havedisabled automatic updates in the System Settings menu. Please see below for more information about updating, including how to update by USB. It supports resolutions up to 1080p Full HD, so you can enjoy richly-detailed high definition content, and also upscales SD channels for enhanced viewing.

I was pleasantly surprised by the T2-R’s performance. While it’s not really a cheap Freeview box, it’s still cheaper than some of the competing boxes, without passing on important functionality.Record 2 programmes at once. Need to record more? The T2-R will suggest alternative broadcasts to make it work Split recordings are now listed in their folder from oldest at the top to newest at the bottom. These are almost always movies in two parts, so the first part will be shown first followed by the second part. The interface is beautiful and most importantly – fast. The “smart” recording features are useful, and navigating your recordings is easy. Picture quality is great, but – as always – depends a lot on your aerial reception. I'm reasonably sure you can watch one recording whilst two others are taking place, but don't hold me to that. Manhattan menus can now be used when using interactive services with video, like 211 Ketchup TV and 265 Planet Knowledge. Previously you needed to exit the service or change the channel first.
