The Comfort 10 really lives up to its name, providing ample cushioning for even the weightiest of folk. Ideal for quick and easy comfort, the Berghaus Single Self-Inflating Mat is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a well-made camping mat.

We measured 66 x 18 cm which frankly isn’t too shabby, but obviously too large for hiking overnighters. We can give this a resounding thumbs up – it is by far the comfiest double SIM we’ve tested for the money, and while it may seem expensive, this is up there with the best air mattresses but without the stress of punctures or requiring pumps.

Free yourself from the faff of foot pumps on your next camping holiday with a self-inflating double mat. In a first that we’ve seen, inflation and deflation are dealt with by two separate ‘twinlock’ valves – one inny and one outy! In a similar way to the Berghaus Air 10, the Vango uses a flip valve to allow air to stream unidirectionally – either in or out, depending on whether you wish to inflate or deflate.

In summary, we are impressed with the IForrest, but please don’t be expecting Shangri-La levels of comfort. This model boasts an innovative self-inflating valve, as well as a soft-flocked finish to prevent your sleeping bag from slipping.

We really love Outdoor Revolution – they make great quality items at the mid-to-top end of the camping spectrum. The Vango Shangri-La (version 2) is the thickest SIM in Vango’s range with a whopping 15cm of travel underneath your body. which is pretty decent for cold weather camping, but not quite on a par with the Outwell Dreamcatcher. This comfortable mat is lightweight (900g) and compact when rolled up, and, once inflated using the built-in foot pump, it provides an effective bed (although, side sleepers may need something thicker) with a brilliant pillow included. The comfort deluxe is ideal for tents but was actually designed with campervans in mind – it’d work brilliantly in both.

What is great about the armrests is that they stop you rolling off the mattress in the night very effectively.The outer material is a superb blend of comfortable and durable, thanks to stretchy soft-touch fabric and a TPU lamination. It may be lighter for you to carry two sleeping pads and a lightweight 3-season sleeping bag, rather than a heavy 4-season sleeping bag and a standard mat. On the market at fantastic value for money, the Multimat Camper 8 Mat is a closed-cell foam roll mat providing additional warmth and cushioning. It is also available as a single mat for when space is at a premium, for example if you're overnighting in a car. One specification we’ve been unable to find out is the R-Factor and as a result we would recommend always using it on a camp bed base.

However, the curved sides to stop you rolling off mid-snooze and the integrated pillow (20cm high) justifies the extra weight. These types of mats are not really our recommendations for campsite camping relaxation and will be examined in a separate article. As said above, if comfort is your only consideration then we really highly recommend the Kampa Kip Highrise 15. There will be some products that are amazing quality and packed full of additional features or specifications, but do take the time to really get an idea if you need that level of quality or if your budget and needs mean you should get something else.
