About this deal

Not only can you grow olives in pots, but it is also the only way they should be grown in heavy soils and northern regions of the UK. Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months. Growing an olive tree in the UK is more of a challenge than growing most other trees, whether they are containerised or in the open ground. Usually about a week from planting you will see the green tips coming through the compost. As these shoots begin to grow you can add more soil potting to your container until it’s full. Always leave the tips of the leaves showing through the new soil level. Caring For Your Potatoes Conifers also need decent draining, so do not plant them in very heavy clay soil or else you will risk drowning the plant.

Dimensions: 55cm diameter top, 41cm diameter base and 37.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 50cm. Capacity: 60 litres. Conifers can be planted throughout the year, but it is best to plant them in the late autumn or winter, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Most conifers are frost proof to an extent and hardy, so they will be able to establish well throughout cooler weather.Dimensions: 50cm diameter top, 35.2cm diameter base and 40.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 45cm. Capacity: 50 litres. Begin by placing a layer of potting soil in the bottom of your container, filling the pot half full is usually a good guide. On top of this begin planting your potatoes, in a large 40 litre pot you can plant 5 first early seed potatoes. Plant them evenly apart but try not to plant too close to the edge of the container. Potato Red Due of York– this first early variety has a red skin and yellow flesh. They are ready to harvest in 10-12 weeks. These are my favourite potatoes for chunky chips. Keep the soil in the containers or bags damp and don’t let it dry out. Make sure you don’t overwater them, especially if it’s raining a lot. Adding organic matter, such as mulch, will improve the water retention of your soil, as well as also adding nutrients for your plants.

Our 2L pots are ideal for the production of amenity plants grown for one year, most commonly used for our 2L herbaceous and shrub lines, this size is great as the plants are small enough to establish but large enough to make an impact when first planted. Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot. A good prune to ensure it doesn’t outgrow its pot is essential,” Antonia Smith from The Norfolk Olive Tree Company shares. Dimensions: 69cm diameter top, 52cm diameter base and 51cm depth. Internal top diameter 65cm. Capacity: 130 litres. Recommended use: Heavy duty plant pots used for tree production and growing.A few conifers such as yew and Thuja, can be pruned hard and will regrow. Most conifers will not regrow from old wood if you prune into it, so take care. Depending on which nutrient is deficient, mulching, using compost or using a spray enriched with the right nutrients is the remedy to this common ailment.

Another disease that can affect potatoes are potato scabs. There are two varieties, common scab which is caused by bacteria and powdery scab, which is a fungal disease. Scabs are only visible on the tubers. Establishment problems can also occur in young or newly planted conifers. Larger specimens will experience more problems establishing, and will require much greater aftercare than younger specimens. Watering the plant well, but not excessively, and not planting it too deeply should help it to establish better.

They are drought proof once established and should not need too much watering, but they are very vulnerable to stress from drought if they are not watered thoroughly. The most common and most devastating disease that affects potatoes is late blight. It is also called potato blight or tomato blight, as those two plants are the main hots for the disease. So, if you want to grow potatoes in containers successfully, you need to know about blight.
