He replies "to know who he is" again. [15] [16] Ravel grants him the wish, then leaves, telling him "That was your first wish." [15] Presumably, the incarnation spent the rest of his life haunted by his crimes until he died and forgot everything. [7] The Practical Incarnation [ edit ] GameSpot's Greg Kasavin said that "the Nameless One" was nothing like the conventional main character of an RPG: "Even Torment 's protagonist, who is heavily scarred, entirely tattooed, and dressed in bones and animal hides, seems nothing like the usual role-playing game hero." [4] Kasavin noted the diversity of the Nameless One's choices in dialogue that "often lets you choose to make promises, bluff, or play dumb; the game lets you perceive small details if your character is intelligent, understand philosophical implications if he's wise, and intimidate or charm if he's strong or charismatic. Your character's moral alignment and his affiliation with Sigil's different factions are openly flexible and have a noticeable impact on the course of the game." [4] He also deemed the character's "perverse incapacity to permanently die" as helping to maintain pacing, [4] and noted the possible changes of classes the character can go through, "your character can readily switch between fighter, thief, and magic-user classes and can rapidly advance to a high level of proficiency in any and all of these, which is justified within the game as not so much an acquiring of new skills as a remembrance of latent centuries-old talents." From this point onward, the Nameless One's many incarnations travelled the planes, trying to gather together information on who he was from the fragmented memory of past existences. [7] The Second Incarnation [ edit ] During his quest, The Nameless One meets several characters who can join him as companions: Morte, Annah-of-the-Shadows, Dak'kon, Ignus, Nordom, Fall-From-Grace, and Vhailor. These playable characters can also interact with the Nameless One to further the game's plot. [18] Morte is a cynical floating skull originally from Baator's Pillar of Skulls, a grotesque entity composed of the screaming heads of individuals who dishonestly advised others in their lifetime. He is introduced at the game's beginning in the mortuary. [17] Morte loyally follows The Nameless One, partly out of guilt for having caused the deaths of some of his previous incarnations. [19] The Nameless One meets Annah-of-the-Shadows, a young and brash tiefling rogue, [17] outside the mortuary, [17] but she does not join the group until a later point in the game. Dak'kon is a githzerai, who once made an oath to help The Nameless One until his death, but became enslaved to him for eternity due to not knowing of his immortality. [17] Ignus is a pyromaniacal being who was once an apprentice mage of one of The Nameless One's past incarnations. [17] In the Rubikon Dungeon Construct, [17] the Nameless One can find Nordom, a modron disconnected from its species' hive mind. [17] Fall-From-Grace is a succubus who acts as proprietress of the Brothel of Slaking Intellectual Lusts in Sigil; unlike other succubi, she is not interested in seducing mortals. [14] [17] Vhailor, found below the city of Curst on the plane of the Outlands, is essentially an animated suit of armor dedicated to serving merciless justice. In The Book of Lost Tales, Nan Dumgorthin, the "Land of the Dark Idols" "(dum ‘secret, not to be spoken’, dumgort, dungort ‘an (evil) idol’)", was a dark forested land that was located to the east of Artanor where a collection of "evil tribes of renegade men" made sacrifices to Gods whose idols were hidden upon a wooded mountain. [3] In the Lay of the Children of Húrin, there are shrines are hidden in secret places for the worship of nameless gods older than both Morgoth and the Valar. Planescape: Torment, Interplay, December 12, 1999, " The Nameless One: "Ravel, the ritual you performed was flawed... it didn't work. Every time I die... or at least every time I *used* to die, I forgot myself and became somebody else. I'm broken, yes..." In addition to unique fighting moves, each character has their own running animation, 'breathing' animation, and intermittent 'fidget' animation. With his party, he managed to enter the Fortress of Regrets and face the Transcendent One. (This is even more impressive because he did it without the help of Ravel.) It is implied that he died in the Fortress.

In late 842 PD, [1] [2] [3] early in the morning in Tal'Dorei's capital Emon, the adventurers begin waking from partying the night before. In the Fortress of Regrets, The Nameless One encounters three of his past incarnations: one practical, one good, and one paranoid. The Nameless One learns that the "good" incarnation was the original man who was made immortal by Ravel, and learns that he had committed immeasurably terrible sins in his lifetime. Realizing that he would be damned to suffer in the Lower Planes when he dies, he sought immortality to give him time to atone for his sins. [17] Unfortunately, the memory losses he suffered after each death and reincarnation foiled this plan. After merging with his past incarnations through dialogue or combat, gaining their combined experience and knowledge, The Nameless One confronts the embodiment of his mortality, The Transcendent One, who reveals that since being separated from The Nameless One, it has enjoyed its freedom and has been erasing clues that might lead The Nameless One to discover the truth. [17] Depending on the player's choice, The Nameless One either slays The Transcendent One through combat, convinces it to rejoin with him, or commits suicide with a special weapon, with either option ending his immortality. The Nameless One then awakens on a battlefield in the Lower Planes, and accepts his fate to fight forever in the Blood War. a b c d e f g Purchese, Rob (January 15, 2000).
