I read the beginning of this novel while I was in Scotland, even spending one morning reading a few chapters while sitting on the bank of Loch Ness, which is rather similar scenery to the setting of a significant chunk of "Rob Roy". I also traveled around the in the Highlands while there, so when the novel's protaganist, Francis Osbaldistone, heads north to save the family business, Scott's descriptions rang very vividly in my mind.

At the time it was written it represented a shift by Scott away from fairly realistic novels set in Scotland in the comparatively recent past, to a somewhat fanciful depiction of medieval England. Obviously, this novel won't be every reader's cup of tea: the author's 19th-century diction will be too much of a hurdle for some, those who define novels of action and adventure as shallow will consider it beneath them, and those who want non- stop action will be bored by Scott's serious effort to depict the life and culture of his medieval setting. But those who appreciate adventure and romance in a well-realized setting, and aren't put off by big words and involved syntax, will find this a genuinely rewarding read. Un tema que me llamó mucho la atención es el tratamiento que Scott hace del judío Isaac de York y de los judíos en general, ya que por momento pude notar una especie de aberración a los hebreos que por momentos se torna bastante violenta por la discriminación y el desprecio que sufren Isaac y Rebeca tanto de parte de los normandos como de los sajones. The story is centered on an English, Protestant man, Francis Osbaldistone and his fair love, Catholic, Diana Vernon. The two join forces with Rob Roy MacGregor, a Highlander now outlaw fighting to defend his family and way of life. This book is best read under the slight influence of usquebaugh, but keep your dirk planted upright in the table near to hand, in case any lowlanders decide to make free with their mouths. Those bloody bastards don’t understand: “Honour is what no man can give you, and none can take away. Honour is a man's gift to himself.” And don’t let anyone...ever... step on yer tartan. Cinema inherited a great deal from the historicist novel of manners—it was a vital part of that “whole ancestral array” that Sergei Eisenstein detected in D.W. Griffith [22] —not least the spectacle of history happening to ordinary people: in Birth of a Nation (1915) or Gone with the Wind (1939), for example, or Gallipoli (1981), The Quiet American (1958; 2002) or Mississippi Burning (1988). Those films are as much about historical crisis and transition as Scott’s fiction was, but they could never accommodate the classic Scott situation: the imagined encounter between a fictional hero and an historical personage. The rise of biography as a major mode of history-writing in the nineteenth century, with its Carlylean sacralisation of great men and women as heroes of their age, made Scott’s hybrid form of fiction and history seem merely fanciful and unhistorical. In film, the Victorian reverence for biography finds its new form in the biopic—in Abel Gance’s Napoleon (1927), the films of Paul Muni, or Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1982). At the same time, the cinema takes from Scott the idea of history as visual codes: the minute corroborative detail of dress, regalia, social customs and manners, natural and built environments. The fetishisation of historical detail in art direction produces another cinematic genre altogether: the period film or costume film. Period films are characteristically emptied out of historicism—“the great crises of historical life,” as Georg Lukács said of Scott. The development of an efficient national finance system and London as a financial centre allowed the government to borrow what it needed. This was a major advantage not just in 1715 and 1745 but also in the series of wars against the French in the C18th. So if you liked The Three Musketeers and Lord of the Rings, try this more realistic daredevil romance! Los judíos, que a los largo de la historia y desde la época del mismísimo Jesucristo, han deambulado por el mundo, sufriendo la persecución de los romanos, de los templarios (como en esta novela), de los rusos, los daneses y los bretones, la persecución y expulsión de España a cargo de los moros y ni que hablar de las atrocidades que los nazis les hicieron durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
