About this deal

This instantly makes this a far more expressive controller and, while the ‘virtual’ faders used for mixing are still no match for the real thing, this allows for cool, velocity-controlled manipulation of the speed at which level and parameter changes occur. The new custom modes are great for bespoke MIDI control too, and are a breeze to set up in Novation’s Components app. Super-sensitive RGB Pads — Large RGB velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads give you a perfect reflection of your Ableton Live session, making it easier than ever to see your clips and play your instruments dynamically and expressively. For customers in outlying areas of the country, the price of the Extended Warranty may be marginally higher, due to the potential for higher collection and redelivery transport costs. What’s more, using the powerful features of Launchpad Pro [MK3], you can lose yourself in your creative flow without having to reach for the mouse. Custom modes let you map the grid to controls of your choice, and create your own personalised performance setups, including drum pads and Then you should ask yourself if you need velocity sensitivity – can the controller’s pads sense how hard you are pressing them? This is a must-have if you want expressive playing of melodic parts – perhaps to replace your more 'standard' MIDI keyboard – or drum grooves. However, if your priorities are step-sequencing and clip-launching, this is probably a feature you can do without.

For Ableton Live control, nothing still beats Ableton's own Push 2, which has simply been designed with nothing more than Live in mind so its control focus with that software is second to none and it has become the perfect hardware extension of it. Rely on our three-year warranty if any Novation hardware needs repairing or replacing due to a manufacturing fault. As you say they are way more expensive so I would expect them to be significantly better than an LPP. Collection and delivery costs are included for the first 2 years in the event of an item becoming faulty These Launchpads also let you choose functions on the pads, changing how the grid works with Ableton. For example, the Mini can be set to have the bottom row of pads being Stop/Solo/Mute controls, while the other pads still show the Session grid. LOL! I wish I had noticed this before I replied. Ah well, maybe me way too wordy review will be useful to others.

I bought the Launchpad Pro Mk3 (Pro X) at the beginning of the year because of the introduction of chord mode. I felt this would be a really great tool for me to use to help my style of writing music and additionally I also wanted to incorporate the Launchpad into doing live sets. This was apparently a huge mistake. So don't think of a pad controller as just for tapping out beats or triggering notes, as many have been designed to be so integral with today's gear that they are almost an extension of it, instruments in their own right, enabling you to compose and record melodies, chords and basslines, or sequence entire songs together to trigger both your music software and other hardware – great news for players and non-players alike. The sequencer is hypnotic and fun to use, and is comfortably the most significant addition to the Launchpad. If you’re jamming and happen upon a part you’d like to keep, hit the Print to Clip button and the sequence will be added to a new MIDI clip. Coupled with the Capture button, this makes it simple to save all your on-the-fly ideas. This works pretty much as it does on other Launch controllers, whereby individual pads are used to trigger clips and the buttons to the side, above and below allow for triggering of full scenes and navigation around the interface. Where the Pro goes deeper is in its supplementary controls, which allow for control of Live’s transport section, record arming, mute, solo, Capture MIDI and quantisation.

Key features

Capture MIDI — never lose ideas and happy accidents with on-device access to Ableton Live's capture MIDI function.

The Launchpad Pro also has a DC power connection and MIDI I/O to be used as a standalone device with other hardware. The unit can be ‘played’ like a keyboard although it’s not as intuitive as it could be. For other MIDI (control and otherwise) options, the global button allows you to set various aspects of the device so it fits with the rest of your gear, including things like 5 or 10 volts for pitch output, CC control mapping and the like. And as SQ-64 doesn’t just output to CV but also to MIDI, it is open to any gear you might care to mention, including hooking up to your DAW to sequence software instruments. It should go without saying, but I don't want to have to buy and use Ableton just to use this device. I'm starting to think I probably should've returned it If you already have Ableton Live it must be version 10 or greater to work with Launchpad Pro. We recommend that you update to the latest version, as previous versions of Ableton Live do not include Launchpad Pro integration with Live. Launchpad Pro will also work as a standard MIDI controller. Novation have been refining these kinds of pad-based sequencers since the release of the original Circuit; at this point their designs are some of the best in the business, and the Launchpad Pro might be the best pad sequencer we’ve seen yet.Reflects the layout used in legacy Launchpad software and projects, which is especially useful for recalling lightshow layouts.
