Find sources: "The Herbs"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( January 2021) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) As with The Magic Roundabout, the sophisticated writing style and narrative delivery of The Herbs meant that the appeal was somewhat broader than was originally intended, and much of Parsley's droll humour undoubtedly went over the heads of the age group that was its main target. Consequently, it still retains a following among those who watched it when it was first broadcast.

Tarragon's name is a double-meaning, as his plant's name comes from the Middle French targon, meaning "dragon", and the plant's species name dranunculus means "little dragon". Which is what he is. Animal Talk: Outside of their respective songs, Parsley and the other animal characters can only communicate in animal sounds. Other characters, the narrator included, have to guess what they're saying by tone of voice and body language. Chekhov's Gun: Belladonna's broom is left behind after she is driven off, with Parsley using the broom's magic at least twice to stop Tarragon and help transform a shed into a carriage. Villain Song: Belladonna's song succinctly describes her plan to take over the garden and and put all the other Herbs under her control. Parsley holds a quiz with Constable Knapweed, Bayleaf and Dill as contestants. Dill gives many silly answers to the questions but still manages to win.An evil witch named Belladona comes to the herb garden, and turns some of the Herbs into weeds with a magic potion. Dill uses a crystal ball to tell people's fortunes. Each fortune ends with Dill being presented with a gift of bones. He eats them all and ends up with stomach ache.

Sir Basil – A bumbling aristocratic huntin', shootin' and fishin' type with an enormous red nose (perhaps to suggest a drinking problem). He described himself the "King of The Herbs" (the Greek name for basil being βασιλικόν φυτόν, or "royal plant"). Despite this he actually had little authority and was largely under the thumb of his wife. He wore a deerstalker and a monocle that sometimes fell out. Despite his fondness for hunting and fishing, he wasn't particularly good at either. Dill decides to host a special day, charging visitors to look round his kennel. Unfortunately, it's too popular and, as a result of becoming overcrowded, his kennel is destroyed. Parsley offers visits to his den instead. Meaningful Name: All of the characters are named after herbs - Parsley the Lion, Dill the Dog, Bayleaf the gardener, Sir Basil and Lady Rosemary etc. Cowboys and Indians, Aunt Mint's Barbeque Party, Toothache, Dill's Who's Who Entry, Parsley's Invention of a Mechanical Dog, Holidays at Home, Parsley at a Loose End, Dill's Restaurant, Sage's Birthday and Buried Bones

There were 13 episodes of The Herbs and 32 of The Adventures of Parsley. The entire collection is available on DVD in a two-disc set. [4] No. Sage is still out of his tree which leads to trouble with Constable Knapweed. It is up to Pashana Bedhi to save the day for Sage. An evil witch named Belladona comes to the herb garden, and turns some of the Herbs into weeds with a magic potion. As more Herbs fall victim to her power, the only hope is for the transformed Parsley to wake up a sleeping Dill. Neat Freak: Miss Jessop insists on everything being neat and tidy and drives the other Herbs up the wall with her obsession.

The major character was Parsley the Lion. In the original series Parsley did not actually speak (although he did have his own signature tune: "I'm a very friendly lion called Parsley....") but his thoughts were voiced by the narrator. Rollings' dead-pan style became a feature of the programme, and was similar to that used by Eric Thompson in his characterisation of Dougal the dog in the English version of The Magic Roundabout. Cast listBeanstalk Parody: "Tarragon and the Eggs" has Bayleaf accidentally spill too much plant food on a tarragon plant, causing it to grow so tall it reaches beyond the cloud layer. Sir Basil even mentions the fairy tale when he first sees it. When Parsley is sent up to see what's at the top, however, its not a giant's castle he finds, but a nest with an egg in it... a dragon egg.

A brand new glorious gift book of a much-loved classic. A celebration of words and pictures from the creator of Paddington Bear, Michael Bond, and contemporary genius and internet drawing sensation Rob Biddulph! Pashana Bedhi's snake escapes from his basket, and everyone confuses him with Bayleaf's garden hose.Tarragon gets one where he warns the viewer that things 'seem to disappear' when he's around, as he mischievously burns up anything he can get his paws on. Dill writes a flattering description of himself as an entry for Who's Who. Parsley does not consider the description at all accurate and insists on going through it with him. Find sources: "The Adventures of Parsley"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( November 2022) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) Parsley wants to get Sage the Owl a balaclava for his birthday. Aunt Mint offers to knit one but Parsley has no end of trouble trying to find out what size Sage takes. Parsley the Lion – The shy but friendly main character, who always sat on the path in front of the herb garden to welcome the viewers. He was very frightened of strangers until he got to know them. He was one of only two Herbs who seemed aware of the viewers, waiting at the gate for them and waving. He hated getting his tail wet. Though in the original series he did not speak (except to sing his signature song), in The Adventures of Parsley he conversed with Dill.
