About this deal

Prager’s fascination with photography began unexpectedly one day when she came across a show by the great William Eggleston. At last, we have a way of separating the individual from the myths that have been constructed around her. The revelation of greater context is the beating heart of Bannos's book, and she’s clear from the start that she sees it as an act of feminist reclamation." Known For: Considered one of the best portrait photographers in the United States, known for her use of bold colors and dramatic poses Among his favorite subjects to photograph are members of the canine family, horses, tigers, bears, pandas, primates and predatory birds.

Vivian Maier invented herself. Then, during her dying days, people who discovered her work reinvented Vivian Maier. She hid her life for reasons of her own. This excellent book sorts out the story. Using an approach that is calm and careful, Bannos offers a look at Maier that is complex and humanizing, but never sanctifying or belittling.

Considered one of the world’s best photographer talents, Edward Weston’s captivating images of peppers, sea shells, and cabbage leaves blur the lines between the erotic and the mundane. There are mentions of Eugène Atget, the father of documentary photography who influenced a generation of photographers in the United States. Among them was Walker Evans, whose portraits and scenes of Depression-era America would be exhibited at MOMA in New York City, where Vivian was born and spent her teenage years. Bannos takes note of this history to cement Maier's place in this tradition of documentary photography and how they would serve to influence her. Not only were the creative class forging their paths, but Bannos describes how photography was becoming more accessible and marketed towards consumers. She brings up advertisements of The Kodak Girl, globe-trotting young women who could now capture all of life's exciting moments with their new cameras. Maier would join this new generation of independent and empowered women who documented the world around them. What’s the right aperture for landscape photography? Is it the sharpest aperture measured in the lab (usually f/4 or f/5.6), or is it “f/8 and be there”? Maybe something narrower? Of course, it depends on the photo. But, on balance, most landscape photographers don’t stop down enough!

Why We Do It: Photographers on the Passion That Drives Them

He worked closely with Walker Evans. And Robert Frank became one of the world’s most famous street photographers. He completed his visuals with text written straight onto the negatives and prints. 3. Eliot PorterI arrived in Iraq in November 2016, looking for stories having nothing to do with Mosul, yet I felt with so many other journalists around, I needed to find meaning elsewhere. I’m a registered nurse, so I sought out a small group of foreign medics working with the Iraqi military medics to treat people wounded during the battle. Living with this tight knit group, I began photographing our surroundings, the Iraqi medics whose job was so morbid, but who were so jovial in our downtime. I love using macro lenses, but that isn’t the only way to focus up close. Plenty of non-macro lenses, too, have enough magnification for small subjects like flowers or dragonflies. In fact, one Nikon lens can reach 1:1 macro capabilities without any third-party accessories, even though “macro” isn’t in its name! A good biographer must strike a balance between passion and impartiality. They must feel strongly enough about their subject to convey that subject's life in a comprehensive and comprehensible way to a general audience, but they must also resist the tendency toward either a hagiography or a hatchet job. We’ve put together a list of some of the most famous photographers this world has ever seen. Most of the photographers on our list have left our mortal plane. Yet their images, messages, and creativity live on. We can all take something away from their careers and work. Testino has also worked as a creative director and guest editor. He is also an art collector, museum founder, collaborator, and entrepreneur. The Observer described him as “the world’s most prolific magazine and fashion trade photographer.” 19. André Kertész
