The Sony A7 III autofocus system utilizes 693 phase-detection AF points, indicated by the green boxes shown here, that cover 93% of the image area. Also, you say 'if the camera doesn't feel it has enough light it will open up the aperture further' - that's exactly where the problem lies, b/c the camera's algorithm for determining if it 'feels it has enough light' needs to be more conservative. Often it think it has enough light, but it doesn't - not enough to focus fast, anyway, so focus slows down. You then have to literally shut off like all the lights to get it to open up the aperture all the way. So at best, it's slowing itself down; at worst, it causes itself to fail. Battery life is, again, solid rather than spectacular. The official CIPA rating is 520 shots per charge (when using the electronic viewfinder). While that's actually a 15% drop from the Sony A7 III, we found that estimate to be a little conservative and it can shoot 4K video for around two hours. The A7R III's sensor may make it seem like a less obvious choice for burst shooting, but 10fps capabilities and a wide-area Hybrid AF system make it a strong option. The older A7R III has a more attractive price point however that does come with a few compromises. The A7R III has a reduced resolution compared to the A7R IVA, although at 44MP that is still no ill-store. One additional bonus on top of the A7 IV is Sony's Multi-Interface hotshoe. This means you can plug in external microphones like Sony's ECM-B1M and ECM-W2BT without needing any extra cables or a power source. It's another big string to the A7 IV's video-shooting bow, compared to its predecessor. Well, one thing is for sure - it's not cheap. The A7’s image quality is top-class within the limits of its 24-megapixel resolution. Colours are beautifully vibrant, while the scope to customise colour output in camera is very much appreciated. Both cameras record Full HD, but with the A7S you can select the XAVC S codec which raises the bitrate to 50Mbps as opposed to AVCHD (28Mbps). Furthermore, the A7S can reach 120fps in HD (1280×720) but with an APS-C crop (1.5x). Another significant change that Sony has made with the A7R V in comparison with earlier models is that as well as being slightly larger (3.2-inches vs 3-inches) and higher-resolution (2,095,104-dots vs 1,440,000-dots), the A7R V’s screen is mounted on a 4-way tilting mechanism. It’s like a tilting and vari-angle screen combined whereas the A7R IV has a standard tilting screen. Larger pixels should also bring wide dynamic range, the ability to record lots of tones in a single exposure. In addition, Sony has introduced new/improved codecs including XAVC S-I 4K (All-Intra), XAVC HS 4K (Long GOP) and XAVC S 4K (Long GOP), plus there’s S-Log2 and S-Log3 and improved S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine colour science. But the news is slightly more mixed when it comes to the A7 IV's card slots. Unlike the Sony A7 III, it does now have a CFexpress Type A slot. These newer cards give you write speeds of up to 700MB/s, which effectively gives you an unlimited buffer during continuously shooting. When saving footage to a card, the camera is limited to shooting Full HD resolution (or lower) movies. Sony has made XAVC S format recording possible and this enables Full HD recording at 50Mbps for better image quality and reduced noise levels.
