Some parts were a bit predictable, especially having played the game so much, it was easy to see where problems would arise. In Minecraft, darkness is where monsters lurk and Brooks does an amazing job of capturing this feeling of fear. For Minecraft: The Island, find yourself transported to the eponymous island, re-created block by block.It has ramparts, dungeons, everything in between and a good deal outside too, from Ye Olde taverns to bustling market squares. It’s not just about antique architectural artistry either: the book includes detailed explanations of redstone engineering, helping you to construct elaborate trap rooms, a switch-activated portcullis, ballistas and loads more. Luckily, and I just recently learned this, there is a sequel coming out later this year and you can bet I will be scooping that book up the moment it is released.

Even if you are playing Minecraft, you don’t feel the pain of a zombie bite or get a full grip on the extreme isolation you face while playing. I’m very dyslexic, so to get back into the language and tone, and to reintroduce me to the character, I listened to the audiobook of The Island over and over again to get me back into how Guy sounds and how he thinks. In The Island, my character shoots his last arrow at a creeper and hits a bat that happens to fly by.When you go into the map, it’s way after Summer and Guy have moved on, so the mountain you’re seeing is not exactly as it was in the book.

Excited to find another person in this strange, blocky world, the explorer teams up with Summer, whose impressive mountain fortress as a safe haven . It is literally a virtual sandbox with goals you don’t have to achieve if you don’t want to and no real story whatsoever. This would be a fantastic place to keep animals, and converting this build into a zoo or farm would be cool.

Okay, so admittedly, you never think that last bit at first, but it does come up in hindsight for some ideas where you really should have seen the result coming. And either way, you can get a flavor of the book's amazing setting by exploring Summer’s mountain base in a FREE adventure map that’s available now! An exciting and unique idea is an island base, where players can live out their days while they fight monsters or defend their homes from hostile players.
