About this deal

Compassionate to yourself and to others (now more than ever this is needed) and the second part gives you exercises to complete to feel and be more compassionate. Personally, I wasnt a fan of the second part of the book, but I would say it could help alot of people and others may find the second part more helpful. I didn't feel compelled to do the exercises, aside from reading them and mulling them over. I have also bought the workbook as I thought it would be an easier format for doing exercises. So that will be another review!

The worksheets would be useful for a doctor or therapist who wanted to encourage clients to carry out these exercises. Supporting research and teaching of the evolution informed compassion focused approach to human difficulties. We can stimulate patterns in our brains that are self-nourishing, supportive, encouraging and soothing so that in whatever we do to help ourselves, we create in our heads and experience (brain patterns) of warmth, kindness and support as our primary starting position. If we do this, we may find that things will be slightly better for us." Gilbert, P., Allan, S. & Goss, K. (1996). Parental representations, shame interpersonal problems and vulnerability to psychopathology. Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, 3, 23-34. If anyone wants to borrow this I'm happy to give you it 😊 it's a book I'd definitely recommend to give more understanding of how the mind works and how to be more compassionate to yourself

Research has found that developing kindness and compassion for ourselves and others builds our confidence, helps us create meaningful, caring relationships and promotes physical and mental health. Far from fostering emotional weakness, practical exercises focusing on developing compassion have been found to subdue our anger and increase our courage and resilience to depression and anxiety.

For example, with more compassionate attention and thinking, we might increase our feelings and motivations to be caring; or practising compassionate attention and thinking might increase our empathy and reduce our condemning tendencies.”

A great introduction into what compassion is and how we can put compassion in place in our own lives for ourselves and others benefit. It is written in a way that is easily accessible, although for anyone with prior knowledge of the subject I wonder if it would seem very simplified. Paul Raymond Gilbert OBE (born 20 July 1951) is a British clinical psychologist. Gilbert is the founder of compassion focused therapy (CFT), compassionate mind training (CMT) and the author of books such as The Compassionate Mind: A New Approach to Life's Challenges [2] and Overcoming Depression. [3] This ability to have empathy for difference, to be open to diversity, to work hard at thinking about how other people may differ from you is a key step on the road to compassion – and it’s not always easy.”This book offers a cognitive behavioral therapist's perspective on compassion and exercises to rewire the brain "neurons that fire together wire together" for a happier, kinder, gentler, warmer (less angry and anxious), approach to life. The authorial interjections can be goofy. It has some good facts and interesting theories but it is the most repetitive book I have ever read or listened to. Yes, it is long, but I treated the reading experience like an occasional digging through the massive tool box (treasure chest, really) of a seasoned therapist, trying out an exercise or two as I went a long and making note of what worked for me. The Compassionate Mind Foundation promotes an evolutionary and bio-psycho-social informed approach to compassion which now forms the basis of a psychotherapy ( CFT) and Compassionate Mind Training. I have been thoroughly engaged throughout, and like the scientific and spiritual aspects to his presentation of facts and assertions. His work is both enlightening and, as I've already mentioned, refreshing, so makes for easy reading whatever your personal, political, professional, spiritual or religious leaning.

It does contain worksheets for anyone interested in carrying out compassion exercises but the exercises are scattered throughout the book and it would be difficult to devise a programme as there are so many of them. I completed it only because I have a particular interest in compassion and am doing research on this topic at the moment. I did not really find it very useful as an academic book even though it has lots of references and I know from reading other writers on this topic that it is very well researched and accurate, to the best of my knowledge.Gilbert, P. (1997). The evolution of social attractiveness and its role in shame, humiliation, guilt and therapy. British Journal of Medical Psychology, 70, 113-147. According to Aristotle and ancient Greek tradition, the only people deserving of compassion are those who do not deserve their suffering, and that sentiment, which is alien to Buddhist compassion, has continued to ripple through Western thought.” Our Mission and Aim To promote wellbeing through the scientific understanding and application of compassion via:
