About this deal

Second, I have recorded a fair number of Organ performances and have heard even more live. File two sounded much more like an organ to my ears and the brass was more natural. I had to force myself to listen all the way through File 1.

My SH arrived earlier this week and I'll hopefully get some time to listen to it properly this weekend. My subjective sense of the ML matches yours, and I'm very much hoping to find the same changes with the SH. I'll be changing only the stylus so it should be "fair" in that sense, although I can't promise level-matching to the nth degree. File 1 initially sounded more "exciting", but rapidly moved to fatiguing, too bright and edgy, harsh sounding. I work in a Vintage Vinyl Store part time and I often bring home vinyl that sounds bad at work but then I play it on my

Thanks OP for the write up! I’ve used the 740ml for a few years and a few months ago got a 750sh and found the differences similar to you. Both very close. More detail with the ML, a touch warmer with the SH. I've read the built in pre on the 1500c is over 300pf capacitance, thus making it unsuitable for the 100-200pf AT spec. It will work fine but could have a tilted up mid treble region.’’ I was wondering if a stylus upgrade would be worth its price while keeping the same body, and your review answers the question. There’s no doubt I’ll consider buying a MicroLine stylus in the future !

I am also loving the SH and my experience with it ( had it about 4 months now ) pretty much matches yours. AT themselves never marketed any upgraded styli for the AT95 leaving other companies to take on the task including LP Gear, Jico and The Audio Files, who’s 95P Paratrace is considered by many the best of the bunch. The VM95 Range Thanks, sounds like that would be right up my street but I had enough stress fitting the absurdly easy (once I worked out how ) 2M Red - anything fiddly with screws will drive me mad. Having a AT-VM540ML, I believe that File 1 is the Audio Technica -- a shade on the bright side of neutral, and I think it shows, particularly at the end.If you get one already mounted in a headshell, the alignment might indeed not be quite right for your turntable. But then again, it might be good - and you could take the chance. I have a similar turntable and phono pre as OP. However, everything else about my system (amp, speakers, etc.) is very different. I don't have OP's ears, room acoustics, or their record collection. No "thin" or "sterile" here either. I measured each stylus in turn using the same body. I first wanted to identify the cause of the slightly higher output voltage of the conical and elliptical verses the other three profiles. AT quote a difference of 0.5MV. My tests showed The VM95C and VM95E output around 3.8MV, while the other still in the range were indeed on or slightly lower than the 3.5MV mark. It is my theory that the small variances in compliance and tip mass are responsible for this, and in reality such a minor difference isn’t going to be of any consequence as the difference is minor, and the output voltage is well within the margin for most if not all moving magnet preamplifiers. Planning to get an ML stylus at some point as its a bit cheaper and it might be nice for extracting a bit more drive out of records that are somewhat constricted in dynamic range and sound compressed by default. Might upgrade to VM750SH one day but considering how cost effective the stylus replacements are for the VM95 series I'd say that's unlikely!

I've analysed the files in Logic Pro, File 1 has 2.3db more output (Ortofon Blue), that needs to be compensated before listening. Strength- Wholesome delivery, tons of heart, presents mid-bass (toms, bass guitar, male vocals) with authoritative swagger and punch, excellent harmonics, lush emotion, rich tonal beauty.Used it for about 250 hrs so far and it's just amazed me how IGD on some records I thought would never play without it it's gone. Peter Gabriel So UK issue always seemed to by a problem but now it's a pleasure to play it and I had tried about 4 copies before I got the ML.
