About this deal

Meanwhile, the story switches to a second point of view and we find ourselves getting to know Bodie and Amelia, twins, a brother and sister pairing living and trying to get by in Chicago. He has a history of stalking women, she’s an artist who’s also intent on looking out for her brother. Their disturbing past reveals they discovered, when they were young, that their father was a serial killer. They walked into the home’s cellar one day to find one of his victims. It was clearly a traumatic event for both of them.

I will definitely keep looking out for Kiersten White’s work in whichever format it comes, but I *do* think I’m done with theme park horror for a while! 🤣 The colours were vibrant and each panel gave the feel of an amusement park, despite its disuse and disrepair. This novel felt lively and exciting and as events became distinctly less so, the panels followed suit. Is it a perfect book? No. But it's an easy read with a unique concept, interesting characters, a creepy atmosphere, and social commentary sprinkled on top. I kept pausing my work to read a few more chapters because I needed to know how it ended! Taken into a shelter they are given the rules, from dawn until dusk the game is on, hide or be eliminated if found. They are told that two of them will be eliminated each day and after that return to the base until the next day when the hunt begins again. To win simply survive the seven days without being found. The Olly Olly Oxen Free Hide and Seek Tournament rules are specific: 14 competitors, seven days. It’s basically children’s game. The award is: 50K!

Harriet is a great character, and after she’s paired with a different detective in the squad, really begins making a dent in the case. It’s painstaking, methodical work that gets her and her new partner Grace Li close to the murderer. And I liked their dynamic, and Grace’s determination to connect with the closed-off Harriet. I own and have read most of Kiersten White's work. Though I do have a copy of Hide, I haven't read it yet, so I was hoping the graphic novel adaptation would get me hyped to bump it up a bit sooner on my list. Without giving much away: I can absolutely say this was wild, jaw dropping, intense ride! My only concern is there are too many characters and some of them are truly annoying and easy to forget. I wish there were less competitors.

The plot was interesting in a Cabin in the Woods meets Total Drama island. But obviously you couldn't get as much detail in the graphic novel format as in a whole novel. I think that is why I didn't resonates with any of the characters or their motivations. I have a new favorite homicide detective and series - Harriet Foster is such a compelling character and I just loved this police procedural set in the Windy City. It’s my first book by author Tracy Clark and I cannot wait for Book 2 releasing this December called FALL. IDK what’s going on. GR keeps giving me double entries of books. Showing I’m currently reading and done reading at the same time. Occasionally when I delete one of the duplicates - I lose both. 🙄 Overall this worked for me, and I had a good time reading it, despite its flaws. I'd definitely read another horror novel from this author in the future! All in all Hide turned out to be a solid start to a new detective series, and a serial killer thriller that is both gruesome and strangely entertaining once you get past the large cast of characters and slower start. Recommended if you enjoy the genre and don't mind your thrillers on the dark side!Simon is a forty-something-year old neurotic effete: over-educated and under-socialized. Living on the grounds of his widowed sister Audrey’s massive estate, he has acclimated to life by burrowing underground, creating what he terms his “hide.” Some of Unsworth’s most stunning descriptions in this book of landscape and distance can be found in Simon’s sections, and, admittedly, it’s unclear just how skillfully Simon has constructed his hideaway or if it’s just merely a series of bushes and fences. From here, he moves about the estate, surveilling and watching neighbors and also the social gatherings of his sister’s theatre group—distanced, remote, but judgmental: “Why should I always be on the outside of everything, appreciating my exclusion with an aesthetic ache?” The challenge is simple. All fourteen competitors must spend seven days hiding in an abandoned amusement park from dawn to dusk. There’s only one rule: Don’t get caught. I have to admit, seeing some of the scenes in here was intense! If you remember there was quite a bit of violence in this one! Seeing even the violent scenes was a little intense. Lol. And of course if you’ve read the book, you’ll remember what’s hunting them and seeing that was the stuff of nightmares!
