The closest thing that I can think of would be the original Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder... but really, I like this much better. Avon's Far Away Royale does not have the suntan lotion vibe that Bronze Goddess has. (It is more elegant than a casual perfume that hints at sun tan lotion). The dry down of this more closely resembles Versace's Crystal Noir...with slight hints of a vanilla - balmy coconut.

The longevity & aura for Far Away Royale is impressive for the price - it wears for a complete working day (eight to nine hours) and carries about a foot for several of those hours. I like this direction. This is unique -- I don't think that I have smelled something quite like this. I'm sampling this with a tester that just arrived in the mail. Upon first spraying this, this begins with a note which is almost like a fine liquor...this smells warm -- like the notes in an after dinner brandy with hints of toasted coconut shavings. This reminds me of some decadent desserts that I have had while vacationing in tropical places like Hawaii or the Bahamas. This first liquor/coconut smell - resembles a brandy liquor drizzle glazed over the top of coconut/vanilla ice cream. There is a richness to this fragrance which definitely reminds me of more niche' fragrances. Haiku is another timeless classic in Avon’s 2001 collection. Inspired by fully bloomed Japanese gardens, Haiku sets an entirely different tone than its previous competitors higher on the list. If I were not smelling them side by side - I may confuse one perfume with the other; they are THAT SIMILAR... however, there is a subtlety of expression between one and the other.

This goes on super strong - yes, like my favorite 1980's fragrance creations and other niche' creations. A dream here! Gorgeous fragrance, smells nothing like the original Far Away however, I suppose it is vaguely reminiscent of Infinity and Gold. To me it's very masculine and smells almost identical to Givenchy Gentleman EDP without the typical "male aftershave" dry down. This is like the female counterpart, very warm, mature but not too mature, cosy like a good hug and not cheap smelling at all. This could easily be a unisex fragrance, anyone who enjoys the top notes of Givenchy Gentleman EDP before the dry down should consider this fragrance. It lasted a long time for me, over 8 hours and I did not notice any change in the fragrance throughout, on clothes it will last over 12 hours easily.
